NYC: It’s a Beauty - It’s a Bitch! a column by John Norwood

Another modeling agency party invite. Usually some very good looking people milling about. Nothing wrong with that, we love pretty people! But, not much of a story. These parties tend to be redundant, unless there is an added element. Hey, it's Q Models tenth anniversary, yay!!! Tens years of anything is really something in the fickle fashion world. Ten years of sweat, nerves, energy, time and money invested deserves some recognition and coverage.

"Bonjour, mon ami!" the man calls to me over my right shoulder. I“ve never seen him in my life. To the left, another man hisses "psst," angling for my attention. The sidewalk abruptly ends in front of me and I stumble into the street, where two cars narrowly miss me. Dirt clings to my clothes and the heat feels like the back of someone“s hand slapping me. My sister motions me over to a doorway, where we enter a shady courtyard full of elegant tables and afternoon idlers sipping coffee next to a photography exhibit.

Such are the contrasts in Dakar, Senegal, a city where I“ve been privileged to spend the last week, and somewhere it definitely pays to be the guest of a guest (my sister, working at UNAIDS). Dakar is the type of city that hides its secrets behind a chaotic, cacophonous veneer. More»

Go HERE for more photos by Scott and Naeem.

Our night with Scott and Naeem actually begins on Tuesday and stretches to Thursday: We were a little quiet this week so we thought we'd throw in the highlights of the week. On Tuesday, Scott's neice came to town. Her and her husband were visiting from London-she's an artist, he's in a band. We took them to one of our all time favorites Pastis, where we were happy to see our favorite hostess/model Nelly Moudime. You may have seen Nelly's hot body in the latest Cane Rum ads. In the ads, she looks amazing in a little black bikini and her billboard on Lafayette stops traffic.

Note from Editor: Summer is officially here, and, because I have a fear of winter like most kids have a fear of heights, I am pretty much an expert on Summer. I love Summer so much that I have contemplated naming my unborn daughter after it. And, if there's one thing I know about Summer, it's that it's the time to drag out the weekends. Which is exactly what we are going to do... Below, Kerry Cassidy let's us in on all things Nantucket.

Monday was memorial day, one of those holidays I’m not exactly sure what we are celebrating (I just learned cinqo de mayo does not mean tequila day), but I’m all for supporting/remembering our troups (hay hay USA). Memorial day also = everyone has off of work and has fabulous BBQs. Not only did I get to indulge in some sloppy BBQ’d food without spilling it on my white pants (that’s right ladies, Mem day is also the official day to break out those babies), but I was lucky enough to enjoy laughs with friends and family on Nantucket. Nantucket Island, besides its usual fabulosity, was celebrating the annual Figawi race, recognized as the top sailing race in the nation.

Scott Buccheit and Naeem Delbridge,We have some very, very exciting news today. We have officially obtained one of New York's most in the know, all about town, fashionable social pair. Scott Buccheit and Naeem Delbridge, founders of ArtWing, are joining the GofG team to bring you more insider knowledge on what's hot. We will feature them in our new "One Night With Scott and Naeem" column, in which they will literally document their fabulous nights out on the town, complete with their saucy insider photos. These two are so hip, and they know absolutely EVERYONE. From the entire Hearst clan, to the Rose Bar/1Oak set, they receive more invitations than Lindsay Lohan's assistant could ever keep up with. Besides that, they are just plain nice guys. Yesterday at brunch, I got a better chance to get to know these two, whom I constantly bump into on the social circuit, and found out all about how they became a pair that everyone is dying to mingle with...

nellie-bly-150x125Note from GofG: Nellie Bly would be 144 years old were she alive and kicking it today. Instead, she has fans everywhere (mostly women) that will continue to hail her as their role model for independence. In between her famous undercover exposƩ in which she faked insanity so that she could experience the disjustices in a mental institution first hand (and live to write about it in Ten Days in a Mad-House) and her record breaking trip around the world, alone, in 1888, Nellie was one of the few female journalists, writing for a Philly newspaper. Thus, a perfect fit for our own new member of the GofG team, an independent spirit herself, who calls the "city of brotherly love" home:

Originally from Philadelphia, where my family still resides, I really only lament the fact that I can't get legit cheesesteak in NYC. Besides that, I am in love with Manhattan and all that it has to offer. I lived in London for several months and did alot of traveling throughout Europe, but ultimately, nothing beats New York. I have a passion for travel, nonetheless, and have a fervent interest in other cultures and greatly appreciate cultural integration in the form of food.

Kelly Will

Note from GofG: Our favorite guest blogger, Kelly Will, (Freelance writer for the NY Daily News and NY Times), is at it again. She"s traded the dulce de leche for dinners with wine masters and iced pastries in Soho...the other Soho that is, across the waters:

In a city where kings and queens make way for their gorgeous young princes, is it possible to dance in their palaces, find the perfect vintage jacket and talk corks with a handsome master of wine?

Only in London, kids, only in London and all in a matter of four days.

I"m back to spin my tales, but more importantly, instead of looking for a new pad in NYC, I"ve decided to play the best game of avoidance and hop on Silverjet. Direct from Newark to London and all business class, Silverjet is truly the friendliest skies I"ve ever flown. The chic chef from Le Caprice in London created a mouthwatering fig and proscuitto salad followed by a fillet of haddock with braised borlatti beans and chorizo as my glamorous in flight meal. Hello lover.

Sappy Wanderer
Note from GofG: Whether along the backwoods trail or along a busy sidewalk, the Sappy Wanderer is there. He exists like a modern-day Kilroy, either wending through the background of a nameless crowd, or sitting in the forgotten corners of a dimly lit theater.  He may even be staring at you right now.

If you are reading this, then I am afraid it is too late: his urban camouflage may have only revealed itself at this last minute so that he could strike these words into your head right now with an endless diatribe akin to the last drunk you saw at the bar come closing time.  Full of more nostalgia than the curved grace of a Coke bottle from the ā€˜60s, you will probably find these words crammed with pundits and misadventures laden with a liberal touch of tongue-in-cheek.

chewess-150x150 Note from GofG: Please help us welcome our newest edition to our team. Our first Chinese/Jew studying Art, Culture, and all things New York...Chewess;

Ichoo esI noun
Chinese + Jewess: Oh wow she's good at math, but she sure can complain; oy, she is quite the chewess.
other variations include Jewnese or Bujew.

A name is but an arbitrary label. As Gustave Courbet once astutely noted, "Titles have never given the right idea of things; if they did, works would be unnecessary." Don't let the name fool you, just read without tinted lenses, unless they are colored rose, that is.

astrology zone

Note from GofG: Upper East Side's "Muffy" is back to share her knowledge on all things under the sun....and moon, and stars, and cosmos....

As the visionary behind Astrology Zone, Susan Miller has changed my perception of astrology. I've had the good fortune to meet her and her two lovely & talented daughters a couple years ago (thanks AW!). When we met I was a casual reader of her column in In Style magazine, occasionally, on my cell phone, and have been exploring the subject in greater depth ever since. Recently I attended her afternoon conference, which was as informative as it was inspiring. MoreĀ»
