Mayor Michael Bloomberg spoke at the benefit last night for Democracy Prep, a network of charter schools in Harlem. Harlem Prep serves 270 low-income children in grades K-5 with the mission to educate them as responsible citizens.
Of Harlem Prep’s 270 students, 89% qualify for free or reduced price lunch, 100% identify as Black or Latino, and 91% entered performing below grade level in math and reading. Despite these challenging demographics, 100% of Harlem Prep’s scholars are college bound.
At the event, held at Rouge Tomate in Midtown, Bloomberg said:
“Harlem Prep believes that with great instruction, high standards and hard work, every child, in this case, all 270 scholars, can and will succeed”
