Community leader, political activist, and nationally celebrated author, Kevin Powell, held his highly anticipated fundraiser last night at Eugene’s on 24 Street in Manhattan. This event supported Kevin’s bid for Congress in Brooklyn’s 10th Congressional District and raised over 75k.

This Wednesday brought out a crowd of 700 including celebrities, local Brooklyn and Manhattan residents, politicians and a slew of media supporters and inquirers. The event consisted of 3 plus hours of non-stop music and politicking with music provided by Celebrity DJ and Philanthropist, Beverly Bond, along with DJ Reborn.

The most anticipated performer of the night, comedian, Dave Chappelle, was unfortunately not in the building to entertain guests but the mood never floundered as the mingling and excitement continued. NY’s Hot 97FM was in the building with both Angie Martinez and DJ Enuff taking the stage along with legendary MTV personality, Fab Five Freddy in support of Powell for the People. J Records’, Grammy-nominated songstress, Emily King, also treated guests to a medley of her current hits. The VIP Reception teemed with notables including Chris Rock and his wife Malaak Compton Rock, ?uestlove from pioneering hip-hop group The Roots, TV and film actress Jurnee Smollett, music industry executives, philanthropists and politicians.

The overall theme for the evening was one of change, one of progression. Kevin’s speech was a call for a progressive multicultural movement of young Americans, inspired by the campaigns of both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, but a movement beyond the presidential election that will make progressive ideals and work a part of the American 21st century. As Kevin Powell is for the people, all of his supporters who purchased tickets and were in attendance at last night’s event will receive complimentary admission at his next upcoming celebrity event due to the absence of Dave Chappelle.
