New Yorkers, Now Even Your Ice Cream Can Be Black

by Stephanie Maida · May 25, 2016

If there is one rule that all New Yorkers live by, it's #AllBlackEverything. It's chic, it's stark, and it cuts the bullshit. We're here to hustle, people, and black is the color that dispels frivolity. No wonder we extend the preference to everything, including water and juice. Well, fellow fashion goths, it's time we've added ice cream to the mix.

Lower East Side shop Morgenstern's is a summer staple loved by hipsters, tourists, and Aziz Ansari alike. Once the temperature stays above 60 degrees, the line outside usually doubles, and with the introduction of their new BLACK ICE CREAM, we can expect it to triple. But hey, good things are worth the wait. The new flavor is (thankfully) free of any squid ink; it's actually made from something called "coconut ash." According to Mic, that's a form of activated charcoal - you know, the ingredient in your favorite face mask?

Technically it has health benefits and detoxifying qualities (although owner Nick Morgenstern claims that's not why he created the flavor), so at least this is one more thing to add to your "healthy" summer diet list.

Coconut ash ice cream will be available starting May 25th at Morgenstern's Finest Ice Cream, 2 Rivington St.
