Should People Buy Masa's $800 Make-Your-Own Sushi Box?

I get rich people are bored and all, but really?

Masa may be the country's most expensive sushi restaurant, but now it might also be the most expensive takeout option. The pricey spot found itself one of hundreds of New York restaurants that were unable to avoid closing following the Coronavirus city shutdown, but after a short time, has decided to re-open for delivery one day each week.

Every Friday, they'll be offering 20 boxes of sushi or sashimi ingredients for temaki hand rolls for $800. The box will feed up to four people, and I suppose when you consider that a typical omakase meal at Masa costs a minimum of $595 per person (drinks and tax and tip not included), it doesn't sound like that bad of a deal. But, still, is this the most appropriate moment for such non-essential spending?

Like many other spots that were forced to close, Masa quickly set up a GoFundMe to help support their staff. One month later, they've raised over $89,000. But unlike many other restaurant donation pages, the amounts donated per person were much higher on average. Ronald and Jo Carole Lauder (as in Estée Lauder) alone donated $30,000.

And while this spirit of giving is definitely something to celebrate and continue, the idea of the same family sitting down to an $800 box of takeout sushi during a time when one in six Americans have lost theirs jobs just feels a bit "let them eat cake"-ish, no?
