So the Amy Winehouse sold. Which was the other painting? It was actually one I hated and tried to give away to a friend who didn’t even want it. It was this one of David Bowie with his guitarist like, going down on him. I didn’t hate it, but I kind of disowned it. So it was like my very favorite painting and the one I had been trying to hawk off to people. Sometimes selling art feels like giving away a child and sometimes it feels like you tricked somebody. What's your process of perfecting a piece? Either things happen very, very quickly or things happen over months and months and months. I never finish a painting in a week—it’s always, I did it in two days or it’s been sitting here for six months and it just never felt done. I'll keep tweaking it or fixing it or completely throwing stuff over it. Like the Amy Winehouse one looked totally different than what you see, for a really long time. It was driving me crazy because it was correct but it didn’t feel like her. Then I sort of got really mad one day, and I was a little drunk, so I started scraping it and it looked perfect. So it bothered me for months and then in like 30 minutes, all of a sudden, it was there. [Photo via]
