What is it about Russ & Daughters that has made it stand the test of time?
J: This is what everyone wants to know! Certainly, luck is an element. For our great-grandfather who opened the store, it was just a way of life, and a mode of survival. But we have a passion for the business; we feel an obligation to make it the best it can possibly be. N: Whether it was out of choice, or obligation, I think the business has stayed strong because at every generation there’s been someone in the family who has stepped up. The fact that it’s always remained in the family gives it solidity. Some of our customers go back two, three, four generations. These foods are the kind that people have always eaten to mark important moments in their lives; births, marriages, deaths. It’s part of the fabric of so many people’s life stories, and so we've created a bond that goes across generations.
