People have called your organization a ‘trailblazer.’ Do you ever feel the same way? Creative Time has three founding principles, all of which I hold very dear. One is that artists matter in society, and should be weighing in on the times in which we live. Two, if you give artists real opportunities to experiment, they can help push society forward, and three, that public spaces are meant for free and creative expression, that they are places for us to come together and share in experiences that could be on the one hand, very joyous and magical and inspirational, and on the other very provocative, controversial, and difficult. It’s important to have places where we can gather as a citizenry, so we can share in the full range of human emotion and experience. These values are very important, so it’s been important therefore for me to champion them very publicly, and help people understand why art matters beyond the studio walls, the gallery walls, or the museum walls.
