Party Prep: Throwing A Cinco de Mayo Bash

by Chelsea Burcz · May 4, 2011

Cinco de Mayo is quite possibly the best party holiday ever. Think about it, it's in May (warm weather), it's celebrating a Mexican victory (by eating burritos, tacos, churros), and it's a day in which getting a little loopy on tequila perfectly acceptable, if not a requirement. Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner, so put on your sombero and plan your party with this guide!

    1. Cinco de Mayo drinks. Tequila is often the holiday's staple, but you can get a little more creative than just taking shot after shot or chugging a shoddy Margarita. Here are some refined tequila drinks, for the more sophisticated palette. We recommend trying the Anejo Old Fashioned or the Cider House Rules for a completely new take on the typical tequila drink!

    2. Mexican grub! Everyone loves a hearty Mexican meal. Try out these muy bueno recipes to make your party unique.

    Alton Brown's salsa

    Churros with Coconut Sauce

    Red Chile Short Rib Tacos

    3. Decorations to make you feel like our neighbors down south, without being too obvious. We are all used to sombreros, pinatas, and the Mexican flag - try decorating with a little creative flair this year.

Jarritos bottles are so fun and colorful, grab a bunch to decorate, and drink!

Authentic de la Rosa peanut candy, a treat and really cool boxes.

Set the party mood with color - these Sun Jars are a bright way to make your location pop.

Instead of creating a center piece with flowers, use cacti to decorate to get a more Mexican desert feel.

    4. Costume parties can be fun and silly, but why not match a cute Mexican inspired dress with funny party gifts instead?
