On The Disco Era
Saturday Night FeverNow I was a little kid in the original disco era, but my sense of it had always been that it was a time of you know coke, platform shoes, Studio 54. Revolution did not enter into the equation. So I began to research this and came across -particularly with the 2nd book fallowing these lines called 'Hot Stuff' - came across academic lines like, “Disco and gay liberation worked hand and hand like a psychic intifada against the rules of gay life before disco.” And I just began to picture this juxtaposed with footage of Barry White you know smoking a foot long menthol cigarette and crooning in that Barry White voice, and I thought this could be fun.  So I kind of chuckled at these theories at first, but then I kind of gained some grudging respect as the research continued. I mean if I merely dismissed them [the theories], I couldn’t have stretched them into a feature film. The shape of what I was going to do with it began to come into focus; that it would be juxtaposing basically the academics now and their analysis of the time now with interviews with as many people as I could get my hands on, ideally big stars who were on the ground at the time. And in this kind of playful way, piece together this relatively recent period of history.
