Learn To Surf This Summer With Locals At Rockaway Beach

by Georgia Bobley · May 14, 2012

If you're interested in learning how to surf this summer, there's no need to head to Malibu. New York is a surfer's playground, and the guys at Locals Surf School are here to show you the ropes.

Michael Reinhardt, Michael Kololyan, and Daniel Kestenbaum are friends and longtime residents of Rockaway Beach, New York, and the founders of the newly opened Locals Surf School. The idea to open a surf school in their hometown came naturally, as Reinhardt, Kololyan, and Kestenbaum have been surfing together for years. After noticing a growing interest in surfing in the New York area -- particularly since the Quicksilver Pro  Surfing event was held in Long Beach -- the founders felt that there was a need for a surf school that was accessible to local community members.

In addition to making surfing accessible to Rockaway residents and visitors, Reinhardt, Kololyan, and Kestenbaum wanted to make sure the surf school also benefited their community by attracting surfers to Rockaway's bars, restaurants, and beaches.

Reinhardt explained their inspiration in an email, saying:

"Locals Surf School evolved from the idea that the sport of surfing is dominated by the local culture of various surfing regions throughout the world. In general, these local groups tend to be extremely experienced and very knowledgeable when it comes to understanding the patterns of the ocean in their respective areas. These locals also tend to create a fun and friendly community of people who all share the same passion for the sport. As long-time locals and surfers of Rockaway Beach, New York we feel that we have the right knowledge and experience to give people the best surf lessons while immersing them in this culture of truly amazing people."

With Memorial Day less than two weeks away, now is the time to start your surf lessons! Locals Surf School is open 7 days a week on the beach at Beach 67th Street in Rockaway. It's only a few blocks from the A train, so there's no excuses for not taking an easy day trip there from the city! Surfboards and wetsuits are provided at all lessons, and group lessons begin at $80 per two hour lesson.
