By now you've probably watched Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," video once if not several times. She's been accused of copying other artists before, and this time is no different. Countless people have compared the song to Madonna's "Express Yourself," but the video looks shocking similar to NYC-based artist Marco Brambilla's work.
Kanye fans will recognize Brambilla's work on "Power," and those who frequent the Standard Hotel have seen his permanent video installation called "Civilization" that runs on the screens in the elevators.
Lady Gaga's video is full of references from Michelangelo to Hinduism to the Illuminati to Michael Jackson. But when does inspiration become theft? While it's not outright plagiarism like the case of Rihanna and David LaChapelle, there are enough similarities between "Born This Way," and Brambilla to be acknowledged.
Perhaps an all caps rage Tweet from Kanye West will get a simple nod of appreciation from pop star to artist?

Not a Gaga fan- but I think the Brambilla reference is a bit of a stretch. Brambilla himself is the master of sampling and should take a cue from his own form.

Gag, are you blind? Thanks for pointing this out Mara, this video is blatantly a direct rip off of brambilla. Lady Gaga is a direct rip off... period. She should have stuck with fun, dance music, instead of trying to reference MJ and Madonna and make herself into an epic icon. There's no need for this kind of shock tactic. People liked the music without knowing who the F Lady Gaga was. I think ADELE should get as music attention as Gaga has to shock ppl for.

Oh, and loved being introduced to Brambilla via the elevators at the Standard Hotel. Haha.

um, did anyone notice the sampling of Bernard Herrman's brilliant score from Hitchcock's Vertigo? [www.youtube.com]

Unfortunately, Nick Knight is far more superior as a director than Marco Brambilla...did we forget this guy directed Excess Baggage ? The worst movie ever made. I think this is a desperate attempt to make something out of nothing. I mean, who cares. Its just a music video !

Agree with anonymous- I wish more of Nick's past work for the past decade was also posted in comparison as you would see that a video Showstudio made in 2007 for Gareth Pugh contained similar elements explored in this film... and since then have made other mirror-styled pieces. Civilization came out in 2008. Originality breeds imitation which breeds originality. Both artists have similar inspirations but different executions. The music to me is more of a "rip off" than the video. If you listen to the music. They are both in the same key both, in duple time and both have counter motifs and the same amount of motifs and both are a major 3rd from the main melody scale. See below. [www.youtube.com]

The subject matter of these two videos is almost the same so it only makes sense that the creative imagery would come out in a similar vain. As for Gaga's video being a direct blatant rip-off, um, no, its not. I saw much more similarity to some super cheese vids of the late 70's early 80's. Besides the human mind can only create from within what it has already been exposed to. As with all art and any creative endeavors there will always be some comparisons. Who seriously cares? I also think that what I have said is part of what inspires Lady Gaga to be who she is and to push the creative bounds not only for herself but for all of us. She inspires us to sit up, take notice and to think. For that I think she is f* fantastic!

OK, the mirror image kaleidoscopic imagery during the intro is a rip off.

Gag is right, you need to be familiar with Nick Knights earlier work. He's been doing this way before Brambilla, who has directed one music video... I can see it being compared to iconic video's from Micheal Jackson such as Scream which was directed by Mark Romanek but as I said before who really cares...its an amazing video ! Bet, Kanye loved it !

Gaga's video looks more like Salvador Dali, David Lynch's Dune, and some touches of Flash Gordon. Perhaps you just mean they are both ripping off similar sources. If so, I agree with you wholeheartedly.

it seems like big artists rip off artists that no one has ever heard of or who have very small followings. tragic. even worse are the tweens who could care less about artistic integrity and will continue to spend their parents money of fraudulent work. Cynthia G. www.ventme.com"] rel="nofollow">Vent
