2010 Nightclub & Bar Awards Program Finalists Announced

Jan 11, 2010 10:18 AM

The finalists for Nightclub & Bar Magazine's 2010 Nightclub and Bar Awards have been announced, and one of GofG's favorites, 675 Bar has been nominated for cocktail lounge of the year. However, the other bars and clubs on the list had us scratching our heads a little...-

The majority of the nominated clubs are located in Las Vegas, and the one New York club that made the list, Pacha, certainly isn't the most buzzed about (though it might be the largest). In fact, out of all the clubs in our city, one could make the argument that Pacha is the least "New York".

What New Yorker's seem to look for in Nightclubs (exclusivity, anonymity, cache) isn't quite synonymous with the huge Vegas clubs such as Tao, XS, and Hard Rock. The Boom Boom Room, which is definitely having its moment, doesn't quite compare, and some of our club-ier clubs, such as Avenue, are miniscule compared to those of other cities. And that's just fine with us--keeps the riff raff out.

So while at first, looking at the list might make one feel snubbed for our fair city, in a way it just reinforces something we've known all along: New York nightlife IS, very uniquely, New York.

New York fares somewhat better on the Bar Category, with 675 Bar, Hudson Bar, and Flute Midtown. (Is it really surprising we weren't nominated for Sports Bar Of The Year?)

The judges (including Steve Lewis) will be asked to select a category to review. The winners will be announced in February, and we'll post them on the site as soon as they are.

Full disclosure: I work for Nightclub & Bar Magazine and helped in creating the all-new look to our awards program. While we understand that this progam can be improved on in the future, the first year out of the shoot is always the hardest. First point, all venues on this list were open for the full calendar year of 2009 so the Boom Boom Room, as the example you used, was not eligible. Second point, we understand that the local audience of each major market has a better understanding of the venues that might be award worthy which is why we reached out to as many local scribes and authoritative and influential people as possible to participate in the nominations and judging process. This is how the venerable Steve Lewis ended up on our panel representing the Big Apple. It should also be noted that as big fans of the GofaG product, we contacted your company and invited you to play a role on this panel and in this process and our repeated emails went unanswered. We felt you could have played a major role in ensuring NYC was well represented, maybe next year! In the meantime, the award winners will be announced in upcoming weeks as will the annual list of the Top 100 grossing nightlife venues in the country (and yes, once again it will probably be Vegas top-heavy because it too is a very unique market). All this leads up to a week of action-packed parties at the Nightclub & Bar Convention in Vegas in March. Hope to see you there!
