Who she is: Brooke Astor didn't begin to really get attention on the New York social scene until she married her third husband, Vincent Astor, in 1953. It was widely known that Brooke married Vincent as a financial arrangement, and a friend of Brooke's even confirmed this by saying "of course she married Vincent for the money...only a twister person would marry him for love." Brooke was a generous philanthropist, and when Vincent died in 1959 she took control of all the charity work he had been doing before his death.
