Is this even relevant?

Before you name-drop, ask yourself if what you're about to say is really relevant to the conversation. There should be no more than two degrees of separation between the subject matter being discussed and the story you're about to tell. Those degrees should be succinct and clear - not a total stretch. If someone is talking about how badly they want to meet Tina Fey, you're welcome to interject and tell the story about the time you made small talk with her in a line at Starbucks and say how chill she was. But if you're actively waiting for a small gap in the conversation to chime in with a name drop, people will get weirded out. If someone is telling you about how they just got back from a meaningful yoga retreat in South Africa and you think to yourself, "Oh, South Africa. That's where Matt Damon filmed Invictus. Matt Damon is from Boston. The Patriots are from New England. Danny Amendola is dating Olivia Culpo. Olivia Culpo dated Nick Jonas. I know someone who goes to the same Equinox as Nick Jonas!" - don't bring it up. Your friend clearly wants to talk about something that meant a lot to her and no one is going to care about Nick Jonas's gains.
