What NOT To Do When First Dating

by Roxana Hernandez · July 27, 2011

No one ever said dating was easy. The first few dates are awkward as hell and we may commit dating crimes with out realizing. And there is no doubt about it-  bad dating behavior is rampant in this city, and it's time to cure it. So, we've made a guide to help you get passed the first few dates with out blunders, mistakes, or faux pas with some common sense advice.

Don't be Cheap

Listen, it's the first date and YOU invited HIM/HER out. Don't ask to go half and half on the bill. If you're on a budget there are tons of cheap eats all over NYC.

Don't give to much space

So, you've been on two dates. Don't leave the calls or messages to once a month. Leaving someone wondering can lead them to wandering. Keep the contact sweet and simple. But please don't confuse this with suffocating, which bring me to my next tip.

Don't suffocate

Staying in touch is great, but the constant texting and calling is...how do I say this?? ANNOYING. It's been a day or two after your date, text them once, MAYBE twice (they might have been busy and forgot) but don't send messages with: "....?" or "Hello???", desperation and clingy-ness are total turnoffs.

Don't jump the gun

Don't bring up marriage on a second date , let a lone a first date. Discussing marriage and which of your children will resemble who, would make any one run for the nearest exit.

No PDA overload please. Thank you.

If we wanted to watch soft porn while eating dinner- we would have stayed home. You've just started dating, there's no need for PDA overload. It comes off easy and annoying to everyone else around you, so just don't do it- no one wants to see it. We've got your guide to PDA Do's and PDA Don'ts.

Don't be a food Nazi

Not everyone is on a diet, so keep your eating habits to yourself. It comes off rude when someone suggests something on the menu and you say: "I can't eat that- it has to many calories". The best thing to do is agree and suggest something else. Like this: "Mmm, yeah, that does sound good but I'm craving a fresh salad."

Don't talk about your body parts

It's not cute when you talk about how big your thighs are or how huge your biceps are. It's pretty clear they saw your chicken legs or big ears and still went on a date with you.

Don't push sex

You JUST started talking! It's too soon for dirty talk. Don't text them: "I want to do you" or even worse actually say it on your first or second date. If it happens, it happens. Don't push it.
