On November 14, the worlds of art, design, and hospitality lost a cultural maverick in Alex Calderwood. The 47-year-old hotelier was considered a true visionary in the business, responsible for the cool and quirky Ace Hotel chain that has become a model for hot spots looking to appeal to the artistic set. With locations we love in both New York and London (as well as L.A., Seattle, and Portland), Ace Hotels are truly an experience, mixing modern design with vintage interiors and funky found objects in every room (not to mention the hip young guests who frequent them).
