Talking To Steve Lewis About His Webster Hall Redesign

Last Saturday, Steve Lewis helped ring in the NEW Webster Hall, complete with a make over by the superstar himself.  I sat down with him to ask him how the night went.  Here is a bit of what he told me:

"It was as I expected. A real old school nightclub experience with tons of stuff happening in different rooms.  Cassidy rocked in the Marlin Room and Kaskade was amazing on the main.  The Euro party on the balcony was really well received.  People stayed and seemed to enjoy themselves.  I think it's going to be what my design intended, a funky let your hair down old school club with great DJ's"

Steve is not done with construction yet and said he's curious to see how Saturday goes this week with Mark Ronson. "It's 40,000 square feel and as usual no matter how long you have there's still paint drying."

More photos and story below

"This wasn't intended as an opening in the classic sense as the joint has basically been open since 1886 and we didn't close for construction.  It was more like an introduction a statement that Webster Hall is here and folks who are disenfranchised by the usual boring beats in music and beatdowns with bottle service can have fun, I actually think there is no place to go on the weekends except here...."

We also heard from our tip line that this Friday, Roger Taylor from Duran Duran is DJing with Plumm owner Noel Ashman handling the Marlin Room with Chris Paulson and DJ Nick Cohen....

There is much to be said about Steve's redesign. The Look is good, but the new management of the place, al la steve needs lots of work. I have Gone to three weekend nights since its new opening. and running a four level 40K sq foot place is different then a small VIP club. I was told that as per usual steve fired most of the old staff and brought in his own people. As witnessed; many had no high volume experience. I witnessed one girl showing a guy how to make most his drinks throughout the night. The new crowd is better then the old regular club crowd, but it seems that the promised promoters never show up and the ones that do have a hard time getting their regular bottle clientele to come in. In an era when bottle service seems to be on its way out, redesigning a club with primary vip bottle service and a tough door does not seem the way to go. Many clubs are going to private tables with cocktail service, not filling up the dance floor with mostly empty bottle only tables. I like the Venue, but to fill a place 10X as big as most VIP clubs, you need to attract a mix of clientele, not just the typical line outside marquee. Your A list and comped bottle Crowed may eat up bottle service, the rest will be left disappointed. I just think this is the wrong venue for a one-track closed mined person like Steven Lewis. Riding on Butters Wings and telling stories of who you 'knew' can only last so long. remember "What you talkin about Willis" was once the coolest saying, or remember that Hot Superbowl Budweiser commercial from 7 years ago? yea neither do I.
