WTF Is Aspic, The Internet's Favorite New Meme?

by Stephanie Maida · November 28, 2017

Millennial humor makes no sense. As the evolution of memes reaches peak nihilistic nonsense, the internet (in certain circles, at least) feels like a bout of sad laughter in the void. The latest punchline making the rounds? Aspic. But why?

Here are a few maddening examples:

Yeah, we don't get it either. But it's a thing. It's happening. This disgusting dish has taken over social media.

So WTF is aspic? You can see that it looks like a satanic form of jell-o. Technically, though, it's a savory jelly made with meat stock, filled with protein-y things like meat, fish, or eggs. You can also throw some vegetables in, or if you're so inclined, coca-cola. It has a distinctly retro vibe - it was big in the United States in the 1950s - but it's been served since the Middle Ages.

And now, in the year of our Lord 2017, it's a meme. Perhaps because it's so gross, perhaps because it's a reference to a 1973 album by prog-rockers King Crimson. The world may never know.
