Downtown After Dark: Walt's Place

walt's placeDo you ever wish you could have lived and breathed the stories of the "old" New York hang-outs? We all need a place like Walt Whitman's in our lives and we probably do.  The beauty of downtown New York is that it transcends time.  We're lucky that the memories and stories last longer than a lifetime.  The city is always changing and if we pay attention, we create our "own" Walt's.

Downtown after dark celebrates the beauty and the bittersweet of downtown New York bohemian nightlife and its denizens from its start at Pfaff's in the 1850s to the present. Our artists of the night share it with us forever.

The following image is of William Dean Howell's meeting with Walt Whitman in Pfaff's cellar.

‘The vault at Pfaff’s where drinkers and laughers
meet to eat and drink and carouse
While on the walk immediately overhead pass
the myriad feet of Broadway.’

-Walt Whitman
