This applies to mostly any occasion. First and foremost, find out who's coming. If anyone you especially love or loathe is set to be at the dinner/cocktail party/happy hour, always make sure you arrive after them. This will ensure that your crush or archnemesis cranes their neck to see if you're there already and it'll keep their attention on the door. That way when you do arrive, your entrance will be grand. At least to them.
