I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again…I wouldn’t wish celebrity fame on my worst enemy. It has to be hard being followed all of the time, and I would imagine it becomes only a matter of time before one would snap. Unfortunately, for a Guest of a Guest photographer, the moment Sopranos star James Gandolfini snapped happened to be on his watch.  On Halloween, in the West Village, Gandolfini assaulted our camera man. Watch video above. And click below for the full story from our photographer:

“I was getting ready to go out for the night to shoot the Halloween parade and then was planning to go shoot the rose bar for you. I was walking up Jane Street towards the parade route, when I saw James trick or treating with his son and some other people. I decided to shoot some video of him, his son was inside a botique trick or treating, jim was standing outside.

I was maybe 25 feet away from him when he saw me. he then rushed towards me and pushed me into the street, then he took a swing at me and knocked the camera down. The person yelling get away from my son, was not my mom, but james ex-wife telling me to get away from her son. Then after the camera cut off, I tried to walk away, I got tackled from behind by one of his companions, right in the middle of the street, he was trying to steal my video away and ripped my jacket he tore away my still camera and it fell to the ground and broke. I then managed to break free and run back to my hotel.”

You want a picture of someone? Then just ask. You want James to appear in your little video or make money off his face? Hire him. This photographer was obviously NOT a kid - just look at his shoe size when the camera crashes into the ground…

Wanna know what Jame’s favorite swear words are? He said so, on Actors’ Studio:

Wow, all these posts supporting Gandolfini’s attack on a videographer 25 feet away in the middle of a busy city? I could understand if the paparazzo was trying to videotape his son over their backyard fence.
But if you’re in public, and as big a star as JG is, you should expect this. JG should be charged with assault. Last time I checked, it’s perfectly legal to videotape/photograph people on a public street. Even movie stars.

Not all actors care about fame, so when they see a person so sad, shallow and desperate to be in the same vicinity as a renowned person that that loser actually films them living a normal, everyday-existence, it probably sets them off. Good thing the boy’s mom was there to protect him and get him the vaseline for the rectal thermometer, or whatever stuff he needed his mommy for.

Betcha it was the wimpy “Relax, man, relax” that got him smacked. Had he said “I’m sorry” or “Excuse me”, that’d be one thing, but he exacerbated the situation by pretending it was JG’s fault. Nothing like invading someone’s family privacy and then telling him to relax, like it’s his fault you’re an asshole. No apology, nothing, just “Relax man, relax”. I’d've smacked him to. Best part was the slap though, photog wasn’t man enough to warrant a punch

It comes all down to RESPECT ! These people have no RESPECT # 1.unspoken rule. No pic’s of anyones kids with out asking. there are to many wackos out there now days. by taking pic’s of children one could be placing them in danger. If someone was snaping a pic of my kid. they would be going to the Dr’s. to have the camra removed from there bum! and yes people in film are expecting to have there photos taken but they are people and do have rights to have a life and try to live as normal as they can. They don’t have alot of private time do to there work.when are you going to learn about Respect they sign a contract for movie co’s that does not mean the public owns them you want a pic Ask or buy the movie.

Last I head it’s a semi-free country. Assault is still illegal in this country, videotaping isn’t. Sue the shit out of James.

Mauricio
November 9, 2009 1:13pm

Was Gandolphini arrested for assault and battery? If not why not? If the man takes his family “trick or treating” to an area where he knows there is a parade, and he knows that parade will probably be filmed then my guess is that he was looking for a photog and looking for a fight. Let’s face it, his career has hit the skids, this was a PR stunt. Nevertheless, he committed a crime and should be arrested and sued.

Mauricio
November 9, 2009 1:18pm

All these people talking about how he was protecting his “kids”. The thing is that there is no child visible on this video. And even if the kid was caught on film the kid would have been wearing a costume and therefore probably unrecognizable. Seems to me that when I went trick or treating it was a game to make them guess who we might be. Are people really suggesting that a famous person has a right to clear any street of any cameras any time they walk down it? If so then are you suggesting people give up their cell phones to a gandolphini who happens to cross their path? I thinnk we can all see how ridiculous the ” you can’t take pictures of celebrities” argument is.

Mauricio
November 9, 2009 1:28pm

Deuces-what do you think you will be paying per volt? Sometimes those things actually kill a person too. My guess is that you’d be very sorry you ever tazed someone. I hope it’s worth it. May as well anyway, I mean, don’t so many celebrities, like Nick Cage, end up in the poor house sooner or later? Just think of the horrid plastic surgery you wont be able to afford, or the drugs it’ll save you from. Gotta love celebrities. Nothing to do all day except preen themselves in the mirror, get high, and go out and taze someone who happened to be taking a picture of some parade or landmark when some old has been they don’t recognize walks by, sees the camera, and tazes them. Not for nothing but celebrities these days are really mentally ill.

Obaze
November 9, 2009 2:10pm

Because its Legal, doesnt make it right. If photog was smart, he shouldve had a telephoto lens and runwhile getting his “footage”.
If you want to get that close to an actor, you better be prepared to accept the price of getting that shot!

Mauricio
November 9, 2009 2:15pm

One more thing. One notices from the video that Gandolphinki never once requested that the photog. stop filming. He could have told him “hey, my kid is up the street, i don’t want you taking any pictures of him”. Now why didn’t he do that? Why didn’t he ask the photog WHY he was filming? Why did he assume it WAS ALL ABOUT HIM?! He JUMPED at the chance to assault someone. He didn’t give this guy the chance of explaining what he was doing nor did he give the guy the chance to stop doing it. He just decided that once he saw the camera that was his golden ticket to assault someone. He really is mentally ill, this is not how a rational person behaves. By the way, the guy who started all this, Sean Penn, is someone who just loves Dictators the world over. Doesn’t that tell us all something about how this type of behavior is perpetrated by celebrities who see everyone else as their “subjects”.

Mauricio
November 9, 2009 2:20pm

Obaze, “legal” makes it WITHIN that person’s rights. Whether or not you think it is right or wrong is irrelevant because YOU are not the law and we are not your subjects. If one is doing what is well within theirrghts to do so then you better keep your filthy hands off of them. YOU DIGGG????

November 9, 2009 2:28pm

what a “tough guy”

Mauricio
November 9, 2009 2:36pm

Actually, the guy had already turned around and was walking way when Gandolphini started the assault. The woman is a complete nut job, the son was in the store, no where near the camera and she goes on with the “get away from my son” nonsense. I think they had this whole thing planned before they left the house. The guys career is dead, “sopranos” is all he’ll ever do. They decided getting in the news would be good and beating up a photog while playing the protective parents was the way to do it. Again, they both assumed he was there to film THEM. Judging by the way the woman spoke it sounds like they were either a little drunk or high on some meds. I’d love to see them in front of Judge Judy and have her yelling at them “HE WASN”T ANYWHERE NEAR YOUR SON MADAM! WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?YOU HAD NO RIGHT TO ASSAULT THIS GUY! This guy was doing what was in his rights to do. If a celebrity thinks they have a right to make someone “pay a price” for getting that shot then the celebrity will have to “pay the price” for making themselves the law.

Doesn’t anyone find it a bit odd that millionaires are taking their kids to small businesses in Manhattan and having them beg for candy? Or is it more like a shakedown? Oooh, I sure don’t envy those store owners, maybe the bulk of their clientele consists of these horrible people who need their egos stroked or they won’t continue to shop there. And once a year you have to suffer them bringing their spoiled little brats into the store and give them candy while telling them how wonderful and cute they are. Gooooawwwwwd! Sickening

Dude, the “girl” wasn’t interested in getting a picture of the “kid”. Stop trying to justify this behavior by dragging out the kids. The photog was there to film the EVENT. If Gandolphinki has a problem with being in front of a camera then he shouldn’t go to an event that will more than likely be filmed , then claim they are trying to film HIM, and beat up the photog. Let’s face it, NY and NYers are just plain awful.

Read the NY Post. He was stalking the family for quite some time hoping for the confrontation he finally got. That 23 seconds is only the tail end of video this nutjob has. Only downside is he didn’t get his ass kicked.

Also I hear there was only one camera involved so the back story is bunk as well.

How about celebs try being nice to people? Offer the person a promise to get a free photo at a better time if they put the camera away. “I’ll be appearing at..” I am a Sopranos fan but this made me less of one. He is alienating millions of fans because he’s afraid one person will put him on YouTube or whatever. Even at concerts, “no photos”, what’s with that?? If someone famous is in public they might be photographed. He can go live in the woods someplace then. If I ever see Mr. Soprano I will avoid him.

They all suck and get what they deserve!

No one can blame Gandolfini for being angry at having someone stalk him and his family, but that does give him the right to physically assault another person.

Paparazzi are low life invaders of one\’s privacy. This one got what he deserved.

Mauricio
November 10, 2009 2:47pm

Joe, the thing is that no one was “stalking” Gandolphinki. He went to an area where there was to be a parade. The photog. went there for the parade. They happened to cross paths and I guess the photog thought. “cool, there’s that guy from the sopranos”. Gandolph thought that since he saw a camera he had a right to punch out the person with the camera. I really do think that they were hoping to run accross a camera, just so they could do a “sean penski” and get in the news to help breathe life into his dead career. He could have tried to talk to the photographer, at least tell him that he didn’t want his son videod.9Even though the kid was wearing a costume and probably unrecognizeable.

Kiba
November 10, 2009 2:54pm

He took the law into his own hands and thats called assault, and he should be hauled-up for it like the rest of us are here in the real world. The money they make is absurd and he should have to part w/some of it and apoligize by saying ”I know its hard for you mere citizens to make a buck, I mean its not like your one of us or anything so heres a cool million”. Screw him and all Hollyweirds! They think theirs dont stank.

Mauricio
November 10, 2009 2:58pm

Anonymous- I believe the cameraman’s account of what happened. “For quite some time” can be very subjective. What may have seemed like only seconds to the photographer was probably “quite some time” for Gandolphink. I’ts only too plausible that Gandolphink and his hangers on turned what may have been only ten seconds into half an hour or more when they gave their account. If there is a lawsuit I don’t think it would matter either way. If someone is walking about 25 to 50 feet behind you down the street with a video camera that doesn’t give you the right to assault them.

Kiba
November 11, 2009 1:50pm

The guy wasnt being stalked! His nubbin must be pretty big to think that. He was out in public and someone wanted to take his picture thats all and I hope he gets his clock cleaned to the point that he and his family has to beg for food! Screw all celebs!
