Crap: Sunday Best's Home Ceases Operations

Well, this sucks. Maybe we shouldn't have complained about crowds. The lovely BKLYN Yard in Gowanus, fresh off its first Sunday Best and a glowing Times profile, is over.

Here's the sad word from Sunday Best co-organizers Justin Carter, Eamon Harkin and Doug Singer:

"We're sad to say that we've just received news that BKLYN Yard has ceased operations. (You can read the story here.) We're still trying to make sense of it all, but while we're doing that, we're working on other plans to keep Sunday Best going. For now, this Sunday's party with Doug, Eamon, Justin and DJ Koze will be at Littlefield. All tickets will be honored, and all the pricing and timing details will be the same.

We'll let you know as we have updates for following weeks, but for now, rest assured that we won't stop until we have a home that makes sense for this good thing we've got. Every loss presents an opportunity. Keep your eyes on our site and your inbox, and we'll be in touch very soon with some good news.

This is a huge blow to New York's music and nightlife scenes and more dispiriting news for Carter and Harkin, as it comes on the heels of the (hopefully temporary) closure of Bushwick's Market Hotel, another great venue for semi-underground and always above board dance parties where the pair threw its Mr. Saturday Night bash .

It's too early to know the whole story behind the closure. It seems like a simple rent dispute. But one wonders what the move means for the future of Gowanus, a place for "celebration at the edge of decay," and alternative party and culture spots across the city.

Sunday Best will continue at Littlefield in Gowanus this week with D.J. Koze. We wish the crew luck.
