[The Guest of a Guest Holiday '08 Party at Bungalow 8]
Update: It Ain’t So. Phew! Say it ‘aint so! Today, CityFile reports that Bungalow 8, the nightclub that opened in 2001 and was the inspiration for this very site, was laid to rest last week. While nothing is official yet, (the last we heard, Amy Sacco resigned a 15 year lease in ‘07) the club, and the street it started, have been dead for quite some time. In it’s honor, we decided to take a look back on some of our favorite Bungalow memories….
“Bungalow 8 is nothing more than an old building in Chelsea, with potted palmetto trees, faded black and white striped/polka dotted booths, and painted walls that are supposed to make you feel like you are in a cottage at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The “No Vacancy” sign over its door is to remind you that there’s no room for you…unless of course there is, which is entirely up to Disco. The location and decor are irrelevant at this point…because it is the people that bring those walls to life that have made Sacco’s creation a legendary institution.” [via]

Bunaglow 8 was one of my favorite nightclubs in all NYC. I will never forget the first time I went there- it was in 2003 and I had just arrived in NYC. I wasn’t sure if i’d end up moving here or not at this point and I didn’t even have a job yet. Money was tight, but I was staying with some friends who knew the scene very well.
That night, we went to B8 and upon arriving, met a very kind Arab tycoon named Matteos Moiniham. He owns many of NYCs best real estate holdings. He escorted my friends and I into the club, where we didn’t have to pay a cover charge nor did we wait in the line and speak with a door manager.
Upon entering, he immediately purchased 3 large bottles of the finest champagne, and poured glasses for my friends and I. Next, he sprayed 1 entire bottle (which cost over $1,000) on the table next to us. Before I knew it, we were all covered in champagne. The bottles just kept coming, and then the other tables began spraying us back.
Within the next 1-2 hours, something incredible happened- this was the beginning of the champagne wars - where wealthy moguls will spray one another with expensive French imported champagne just to have a good time. Up until that moment, i’d never seen anything this incredible in my life. If I had to guess, over $250,000.00 USD were spent this night on just the champagne alone (not to mention countless bottles of premium vodkas and also shots of tequila).
I still remember this night at Bungalows and I will never forget it. I haven’t been back since, but it’s one of my best memories of why I love NYC.
