The bottom of this recent $54 dollar bar receipt from 1 oak says “A 20% service charge has been added for Bottle Service Thank You”.  Shady indeed.  And perplexing of course, because no bottles were purchased.  And because there is no itemization on the receipt, it is impossible to tell if 20% was snuck in there or not.  Shady element number 2.  Certainly a ponderous situation, and one that may give you pause to think next time you open up a tab.

clearly one could read it as if you had had bottle service, they included 20%. if not, it doesn’t apply. this is the least of the problems at 1oak.

uh, I have my bar tab from OAK on Friday night and 4 Patron costs me 72 bucks and I left a $6 tip. I don’t see any automatic charge of 20 per cent

this is just something that appears on every receipt that gets printed at 1OAK. it doesn’t mean that you were charged it just means that if you get bottle service you are charged the 20%. The answer is, if you’re not sure, ask for an itemized receipt which i always make sure i get regardless of where i go.

I started noticing this happening around a year ago, as more and more places are automatically adding gratuities/service charges on bar tabs. I ALWAYS insist on getting the itemized receipt so that I can see if this has been done or not, and have sometimes encountered staff that act put out when I ask.

Shame on the management of all these places for not instructing waitstaff that it should be done. It is a very shady practice indeed, as of course they do it hoping they’ll get double-tipped.
