The Secret To Making Park Slope Hotel Brooklyn's Party Central

by Ross Kenneth Urken · January 18, 2011

The plans for the new 11-story Hotel Grand Prospect have, of late, garnered resounding approval from those who hope to have a rooftop hot-spot in Park Slope. But for a neighborhood that uses civic contention as a dear past time, how has support been so unanimous?

Slopers get huffy about the co-op and dog parks, and in the fashion of NIMBY disputes, this luxury hotel had to pit itself against the Community Board 7 Land Use Committee last week.

As The Observer pegs it,  a 400-space parking garage that comes with plans for the hotel has served as an emulsifier to secure the deal with neighborhood detractors.

The Brooklyn Paper noted that Irene Lo Re, the head of the Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District baited the crowd with the garage appeal:

"The biggest problem here is parking. We can't turn our backs on 400 spaces."

Michael Halkias and his wife, Alice, who own the Grand Prospect Hall space set to be converted into a hotel, have long known the appeal their space has in the neighborhood.
