Cordell Lochin, “partner” in popular LES joints, La Esquina and The Box, was sentenced for 39 months (3 years). The Docket Text reads as follows:
Minute Entry for proceedings held before JUDGE D. BROCK HORNBY: Sentencing held on 1/22/2008 as to CORDELL LOCHIN. Imprisonment Thirty-nine (39) months on each of Counts One (1) and Two (2), to be served concurrently; Supervised Release Three (3) Years; Fine $35,000.00 plus interest as to Count One (1); Special Assessment $200.00. Defendant remanded to the custody of the United States Marshals Service. (Court Reporter FTR). (lng)
A few months ago, we broke the news that Cordell Lochin was involved in a cross-border drug smuggling ring. We also speculated that this was the reason why La Esquina and The Box were both raided on the same night. On numerous occasions both orally and in print Lochin claimed to be a partner in both establishments.
Mr. Lochin was at his regular table outside La Esquina, the Nolita restaurant of which he is part owner…Like Mr. Lochin’s other ventures—he’s part owner of hipster dive 205 and burlesque club the Bo. [The Observer]
Since then, he has submitted documents trying to deny his ownership in both establishments in an effort to escape paying large fines relating to his offense, even though documents show that he had a yearly income of$177,000 from his ventures. His sentencing has been put off 5 times, but now the Judge has finally reached a decision.
The normal statutory sentencing guidelines dictate a minimum of 5 years for Cordell’s offense, however, because he has in effect”come clean” before the court, the Judge exercised a “safety valve”, giving Cordell a lighter sentence. Nonetheless, 39 months is no small amount of time. We are curious to see if Cordell can re-enter the scene again and have success when he is released.
Woah! I can’t believe he’s legit going behind bars. I used to see him out all the time!

maybe he’s denying his ownership of those places so they won’t be seized since his investment would have been with drug money.

I love how annoyed the writer sounds that Cordell made $177k last year!!!People of Color are not supposed to make 6figures, when they do, certain people are ANNNOYYYED!!! It is what it is!! RACE is a serious issue in this country&in New York…His investment was with drug money????He is from a very wealthy family&he invested in those places long ago. THE FREAKEN KENNEDYS MONEY IS FROM BOOTLEGGING BEFORE LIQUOR WAS LEGAL!!!!DO you all comprehend that ALL OLD MONEY WAS GOTTEN FROM ILL-GOTTEN GAINS or SLAVERY!!!!!
SOME of my fellow posters are so angy they use profanity,,,,no need for that…Recognize that ALL of you who have parents who have money have forefathers who either owned slaves, were mobsters or bootleggers. It is the history of this country. Do not spit on someone who tried what all of your forefathers have done, he jus got caught!!!

I just have one question, does it take a lot of effort to be unkind? All of you posters who have chosen to kick a human while he is down, please realize that life is filled with ups and downs and your turn will come to be stepped on by a well heeled shoe.
I know that when I am happy&pleased with my life I find it difficult to be unpleasant.
Therefore, I will assume that the posters here are racists, supremely unhappy, or simply NUTZ. Those are the only reasons that can explain that there would be joy felt from another’s misfortune.
I am sure that there is nothing that can be written or said that will bring Cordell lower than he is now, thus he can only grow and rise from this ordeal&I believe his friends & family will be there for him through this.
C. David Crysty - You wrote “I love how annoyed the writer sounds that Cordell made $177k last year”. How could you possibly infer from the text that the writer was “annoyed” or even the slightest bit perturbed by this fact. The simple point of that sentence was that Cordell may be paying a fine that is relative to his amount of income (as determined by the court). It is a fact, and was reported simply as that, objectively without editorial or commentary.
Please point to 1 sentence in the article that wasn’t either objective, factual, or was misleading. You can’t because it was plain vanilla reporting with proper source citations. There simply is no agenda to the piece. Cordell is a public person, involved in several high-profile establishments, and certainly warrants coverage. You may dislike the subject matter, but that’s not relevant. You can’t pick and choose when you want to read about Cordell, and when you don’t. My guess is you were all cheers when he was profiled in the Observer and had no problem with him being in the press then. I don’t like to read about a lot of things in the news, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t newsworthy.
Lastly, its too bad that your final resort is to throw out “racist” as a motivation for reporting. This my friend is indeed a slippery slope that you surely do not want go down. Baseless allegations of racism show the tortured nature of your inability to accept the fact that Cordell’s actions have consequences that ultimately will be the subject of public scrutiny due to his public persona.
I do wish the best for him. His road ahead will no doubt be filled with hardship, but I hope he can make the best of it, and if he does decide to return to NYC and re-enter the hospitality space I will be happy to cover any progress and new developments he makes.

I also love how certain people pretend race is not an issue, but hey, in this country we are allowed to pretend…look at Hillary&Bill…they pretended for a long time about a multitude of things&we still LuV ‘EM!
Race is a slippery slope that I don’t want to go down? SURE I DO!!! RACE must be discussed. The fact that people who have never been faced with racism ASSUME it is nonexistent are the reason why it continues.
His road ahead will most likely be filled with hardship? He will do his years, that I imagine will be rough&when he gets out he will be met with very supportive friends and family, who will assist him as he begins his life anew.
But I do LUV the negative bent you put on his future.LOL!! A person does not move to a new country, invest in several businesses, have an unfortunate situation&ROLL uP&DIE! He will be fine, he will begin anew after he deals with his long sentence.
The only person who knows what his future holds, is Cordell. Only he knows if he has the inner ability to make it back. Not you, nor anyone else. But your interest in his sorrow is Uhhh???? SAD. Be nice for CHRISTS SAKE
