[Lincoln Tunnel]
Last spring, when word got out that Mayor Bloomberg was contemplating plans for bridge and tunnel toll hikes, Jerseyites cried bloody murder, while us Manhattanites rejoiced at the prospect of a reduced number Guidos and B+T. Now, New Jersey Governor Jim Corzine is proposing to massively hike tolls on NJ's main roadways, making it increasingly expensive to venture out into the armpit of America.
"Drivers would face a 50 percent increase in tolls on the state’s three toll roads — the New Jersey Turnpike, the Garden State Parkway and the Atlantic City Expressway — every four years, beginning in 2010. "
This of course is being done in an effort to reduce the state's massive debt, a result of a stagnant state economy and Jersey-flight. But while this will in theory increase tax revenues, in reality the dead-weight loss created from less people traveling the expensive roads will most certainly cancel out any perceived benefits. Moreover, frequent travelers (i.e. truckers) will most likely get a discount.
Sorry Jim, but Jersey isn't that desirable of a location, we don't need more reasons not to go.
