HowAboutWe.Com, A Dating Site We Might All Actually Use

Feb 17, 2010 4:52 pm

Ok, we can't stop talking about this new dating site, howaboutwe.com. Instead of rating people on their (inevitably lame) dating profiles, you rate them based on their DATE ideas! It's the most fun thing ever.-

-

-

First, they make you go through and rate a series of sample dates, so they get an idea of your taste.

Examples include:

How about we....get coffee and play scrabble at a cafe?

(Our response: Sure!)

and

How about we...buy roses and give them out to unsuspecting strangers?

(Our Response: answers ranged from "wtf! no???" to "I think it's a good idea!!!...but I'm also from Nebraska...")

Next comes the really fun part where you get to THINK UP DATE IDEAS!

Do you realize how revolutionary this is? Instead of having to screen people based on their attractiveness, station in life, availability, background, education, and personality, you can just weed through all the losers and find the one person in New York City who would willingly get ring-dings and ride a tandem bike around Little Italy, if that's what floats your boat!

Here are our date suggestions:

Rachelle: How About We...Get drunk And Go On Chat Roulette?

Cameron: How About We...Get Popcorn With Extra Salt, Nachos, Large Coke, Sour Patch Kids...And Watch Dumb And Dumber?

Chiara: How About We...Get Sloppy Fries At Schnippers And Go Look For Ghosts At Merchant House?

Sarah Mandato: How About We...Get Bloody Marys And Oysters And Gallery Hop?

Billy: How About We...Go To The Russian Baths?
("Because A Russian beating me with a stick is more embarrassing than any bad date could be...")

Sarah Kunst: How About We...Go On A Bar Crawl, And End Up At A Diner At 5 A.M.?

I mean...there's someone out there for everyone, right?? We're all going to find love!

So, the russian baths...ummm. makes me think girls are gonna be better at proposing dates on this thing--sorry billy. i did like extra salt popcorn and the vouyerism of the chatroulette date. brian (who I'm starting howaboutwe.com with) - you definitely don't need to find a girl who loves your ridiculous shiny sneakers. alright me: maybe--how about we go to chinatown, commit a small and innocent act of shoplifting, and then get dumplings?

@stacy: Quite frankly I am happy to see ideas beyond the typical dinner and conversation. It's more fun to get to know someone while doing something cool...and probably makes for a more memorable date in the end. Looks interesting!

Interesting concept. But I've found that the best first dates are not necessarily gimmicky or terribly original. Getting to know a person is generally pretty fun in and of itself ... not that random, creative dates aren't fun, but I think they're more fun once you've known a person a while. Although, perusing microfiche with a water bottle full of tequilla does sound pretty awesome.

What about meeting at a thrift store and picking out silly outfits for each other. Then continue the date in those outfits? Could become very interesting....

First dates are a challenge.... Yes, it can be really great fun to get to know a new person...but there's also the risk that it will be boring.... I'm too busy to waste my time on boring.... I'd rather get to know a new person WHILE I'm enjoying a gallery show I wanted to see anyway....

Sounds like a great idea to me...You can avoid those things you hate about first dates. No need for the awkward: "Actually, I think I'll pass on that drink." You can just choose a short and sweet date instead, then extend it if you are into the person.

How about we...meet for mimosas, then bring paper and pencils and do sketches of life in central park

@billy. okay, i've become convinced via twitter that the russian baths are also an awesome first date. I'm also convinced that, um, buying small plastic trinkets in chinatown might be best. In all cases what it makes me think is that if you propose dates you would really like (whether they're simple or bizarre or classic or whatever) then the people who want to go on them are more likely to be people you'll like (or even come to love).
