John Mayer, in a characteristically long online rant, declared that he's officially "over" twitter. It's just not doing it for him anymore. You understand. But don't worry: he's found the perfect replacement.-
-
He says:
"Call me crazy, but I don't think it's the healthiest thing in the world to read scads of mentions/@replies and effectively open the floodgate of other people's approval/disapproval..."
Uh-huh. So what SHOULD we do with our time? Read a book? Volunteer? Knit?
No. According to John Mayer, we should simply transfer our Twitter dependency onto Tumblr.
"This is where Tumblr comes in. It's the future of social networking if your image of the future features intelligent discourse."
Oh really? Intelligent discourse? Really?
"I love reading other Tumblr users replies, because they're thoughtful by virtue of the fact that if they're not, they'll bring the intellectual property value of their own blog down, and that's a commodity on Tumblr."
Uhhh, you lost us Mayer. Since when is Tumblarity based on the quality of intellectual property?
Then, he challenges fans to open up their own Tumblr account to continue the discourse, and so far, his post has 3,087 replies. Basically, it's the best day of David Karp's life. (In fact, he wrote "I love you, John" on his own Tumblr, probably with tears in his eyes.)
Here is his moving call to battle:
"Agree or disagree, lionize or demonize, but for God's sake, be original. You'll have all the room in the world to do it now."
Go forth and tumble great things, kids.
