Kristian LaliberteThis weekend social gay Kristian Laliberte tweeted that he was verbally “assaulted” at The Georgica Restaurant & Lounge in East Hampton by a heterosexual patron who apparently spouted a verbal barrage of hatred at the man-about-town.  When Laliberte cried foul to the management, he was told that the person couldn’t be kicked out.  Why?  Because they spent a lot!

@kristianlaliber - Love getting assaulted at georgica and being told the douche who called me a jew and a fag was too rich to get kicked out

Upon reading this, we asked Laliberte to elaborate on the situation.  (We have also emailed Georgica Management and are awaiting a response).  He refused to go into details about the specific altercation at the nightclub, but took the opportunity to provide a verbose treatise on the greater social ramifications of the casual use of anti-gay slang.  And here it is:

And letting people get away with it. It’s sad that people think are we “pulling the gay card” a consequence of the fact many heterosexuals think its cool or ok to call gay or straight people a faggot as a joke. It’s even sadder when the word is used as an adjective to connotate “stupid” or “weak” “girly.” But in this day and age to call a gay person a “faggot” as a derogatory slur out of pure hate and prejudice is reprehensible.

A lot of my straight friends don’t get why its such a big deal. However if the LGTB community wants to achieve more tolerance and equality, they need to realize that this term is nothing short of saying that homosexuals are second class citizens, that something is wrong with us.

When straights and gays realize the import of the world and all that it implies, its to recall a time when the n word was perfectly acceptable, a time when a certain group was inferior to the general population. We all know where that can lead.

Don’t people realize that gays are being hung in Iran or bombed in Israel. People should stamp out hatred whenever they see it, and I was disappointed and ashamed that this certainly wasn’t the case with the staff at the night club.

Maybe one day it will.

Hm. Funny. Some of the words Laliberte uses in private conversation probably - and, just a guess here - make this latest altercation look tepid in comparison. He’s awful. Truly.

How do we know Kristian Laliberte is innocent in all this? Did Kristian say or do something insulting first to this individual that triggered the alleged verbal altercation? It’s interesting that Kristian refused to provide details but just cries victim. Gimme a break.

i agree

i was there, and this is funny, these argument was between a customer and kristian, and the customer wasn’t kicked out because he didn’t do anything wrong! kristian went to his table and poured out champagne (and he didn’t even know the guy!), from what i heard, that is how the argument started.

kristian should learn not to drink from other people’s tables, and not to mention isn’t naeem, the door person of georgica gay? isn’t their publicist sasa gay? come on guest of a guest, this is def. not post worthy, and kristian needs to pay for his own drinks and not play the gay card

(sorry for venting)

I don’t care what KRISTIAN said or did - calling people derogatory names in public, the media or whatever is definitely de classe and very un gentleman like. We certainly don’t approve.

That said Kristian, how do you manage to make headline news in the middle of August? - you are a lovable phenomenon my dear. Don’t let those ‘bitches’ get the better of you…I know I don’t.

1) How does he not know how special the rich are treated already? Hasn’t he been around enough to know that’s just how it is?
2) This story was funnier when Perez Hilton did it.

Insulting slinging degrading bulls**t’s not limited to Hampton’s bottle service. A range of incidents - in California, & Iraq - come to mind; there are thousands of others:

- The February 12, 2009 murder of 15 y.o. Larry King - shot in the head by self-proclaimed white supremicist, Brandon McInerney during class. King was murdered after being relentlessly tormented & verbally harassed;

- last week, @ Crunch Gym/Fitness in West Hollywood, a salesperson was overheard saying, “See, and here, you can check your internet!”, a member turned & said, “Actually, no, you can’t; there hasn’t been internet for two years,” the member was told to, “Shut up, you bitchy little fa**ot” & subsequently, “fired” from the gym;

- In Iraq, gay men are being systematically hunted down &, when they’re not slaughtered outright (genitals cut off & throats slit), their butt holes are glued shut and, because hospitals refuse to treat this, they die a horrible & painful death.

Accountability? Larry King’s assailant is convicted, sentenced & joins his white supremicist brethren. Crunch, alerted of the hate incident, does nothing. The American government offers zero protection to LGBTQ people in Iraq.

So, Kristin’s experience - justifying kicking a paying customer - is indicative of hetero culture refusing to see the violence and hate that LGBTQ people deal with on a daily basis.

Here, in Amerika, the country’s “okay” with The Gaze (a phrase brought to you by … a straight woman), having their moment of being amusing on TV shows but when it comes right down it to - whether it’s the Hamptons, West Hollywood or Iraq - fa**ots are still considered second class citizens, expendable, not equal, & “kickable,” and, not safe, whether it’s in a club, classroom, gym or walking down a dusty road in the Middle East.

Laliberte’s viewpoint is correct. Abusive language does denigrate those against whom it is used, and it’s a shame such words are thrown about without any thought as to their psychological harm. That said, one must keep in mind that others are entitled to their opinions - however distasteful and offensive they may be. In the U.S. we have the First Amendment to ensure that unpopular speech is protected, within limits, and this principle is a sound one. As time moves on, we are ever so gradually getting away from these types of slurs but, sadly, we have a long way to go; ignorance and prejudice are alive and well, and will be for the foreseeable future. The truth of that is readily apparent within the pages of my recently released biographical novel, Broken Saint. It is based on my forty-year friendship with a gay man, and chronicles his internal and external struggles as he battles for acceptance (of himself and by others). More information on the book is available at http://www.eloquentbooks.com/BrokenSaint.html.
