“I Was a Professional Fighter. Would I Box Him In A Boxing Ring Or A Bare Knuckle Match? Yes”

[The Barack Obama mural at 1 Oak that is now hanging above the previous bull canvas]
While not a museum, 1 Oak’s latest eye-catching mural of our 44th President and its placement (over their quintessential bull photo (below), shows the hip trend of Obama and how he has really struck a chord with the youth. Can you think of any other modern day president that would have gotten a mural in a nightclub?
Spontaneous Music Concerts At Rose Bar, Obama At 1Oak, Thursday Night’s Are Back In Business!
2009 has been off to a slow start. But, with inaugural parties finally ending, and people still ready to celebrate CHANGE, there are new treats in NYC nightlife land…Today, a couple of tips came in about an impromptu concert that several musician/patron’s of Rose Bar partook in. Specifically, we heard that our favorite Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction started rocking out with Adam Green, and others.
1 Oak To Launch Their First Ever “House Music Night” With The Koch Brothers This Thursday
This Thursday night 1 Oak will begin hosting House music nights, brought to you by the Koch brothers who run the Saturday Brunch party at Merkato 55. An interesting development for the club whose music, up until now, has been somewhat largely dominated by hip-hop music. We are excited to check in on the party and see how it plays out for both the Daniel and Derek, as well as the 1 Oak family.
It’s always a comforting to know that you can get internet access at your local nightclub these days. 1 Oak’s wireless system looks to be running in fine form. I don’t suppose we will see club goers bringing their laptops into clubs anytime soon, and nor does it seem to be the best environment for work. At least not for that kind of “work”. But the option does exist for those of you who need more than a blackberry to field emails. Just make sure not to spill one of the mixer crafts, keyboards sticky from orange juice are simply no fun!
APB on missing cake, last seen at 1OAK. Am 2 feet high by 2 feet wide, brown and orange and said to be very delicious. Prime suspects include the two waitresses last seen holding cake at Scott Buccheit’s birthday party, and Emily Brill (obviously not invited but it was a masquerade-and she had motive). If you have any information regarding my whereabouts please contact Marc Matthias or Benny Rivera of Diverse Desserts

We’ve been surprisingly good boys for the last three days. We’ve been going to just as many events as usual, but we’ve been home by 11. Monday found us at the Blackbook welcomes Steve Lewis at Aspen Social. We serendipitously ran into Rachelle as we exited cabs and hit the event together. We ran into Steve Lewis first thing. He was holding court with Blackbook’s Cayte Grieve and owner Ari Horowicz. No sooner had we said our hello then Steve insisted on giving us all a tour. Once the tour was over we ran into Jen Gatien, Steve Kasuba and Debbie Harry. Having seen the host and the space we made our exits.
Tuesday we first went to John Varvatos’s private dinner at Mario Batalli’s Italian Wine Merchants. The party was to commemorate the watch that John designed with Ernest Benz. We were greeted by Robert Fowler and ate some scrumptious pasta and juicy steak. We rushed out to make the next party at the IAC. The party sponsor was Audi and the hostess was the lovely Padma Lakshmi. You couldn’t swing a dead cat without hitting a promoter and in a few minutes we ran into…

Scott is making our heads spin with all of the parties they’ve been hitting up. We don”t know how they do it, but just two of their nights is like a month”s worth of excitement:
Wednesday found us all dressed up with too many places to go. So we decided to miss the Out Party and headed straight to the Conde Nast Traveller Awards party at the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue. Their parties are always over the top and this one was no exception. We met up with our friends Melanie Weitzner of Rubenstein PR and Hugo Boss”s Ward Simmons, and made the rounds. Others at the party included Brad Leinhardt, Douglas Marshall, Sue Shin, Michelle Jimenez, Devorah Rose, Andrew McCarthy, Eric Mabius, Matthew Settle, Mario Cantone and Tom Filicia.
As we stepped out we ran into our friend Aubrey O”day. Aubrey was recently let go from Dannity Kane and we say congratulations. Who even knows anybody else from Dannity Kane?

The bottom of this recent $54 dollar bar receipt from 1 oak says “A 20% service charge has been added for Bottle Service Thank You”. Shady indeed. And perplexing of course, because no bottles were purchased. And because there is no itemization on the receipt, it is impossible to tell if 20% was snuck in there or not. Shady element number 2. Certainly a ponderous situation, and one that may give you pause to think next time you open up a tab.
When we got the invite for Richie Akiva’s Birthday party we were excited and intrigued. As many of our readers know, 1OAK is our unofficial home away from home and we are there at least a couple times a week. Richie’s invite listed about 40 or so female celebrities, models and socialites to host his soiree last Friday at 1OAK. Not to say the party was all frivolity, Richie threw the party in conjunction with Charity Water and the Charity Water plexi-glass box at the front of the club was filled with cash by the end of the night….but I am getting ahead of myself.

Spotted: Bulls in 10ak. Irony in clubland.
It was not too long ago when Richie Akiva was bullish on the prospects of 1oak “changing the face of nightlife” as he so brashly put it in an interview with New York Magazine. So bullish in fact, that he and his partners Ronnie Madra, Scott Sartiano, and Jeffrey Jah sunk a cool $3 million dollars into the space. But, with the changing of fortunes on Wall street, will their bottle-fueled venture be hurting as the slow-moving train wreck that is wall street keeps grinding down the tracks?

The collapse leaves only two true Investment Banks left standing
This meltdown may very well be the pin-prick that bursts the club price bubble. In the past decade, as New York has been injected with funny money, a bottle culture has permeated clubland, driving the price for a single bottle to upwards of $400. We have often loathed the homogeneous effect of this model and bottle culture. More»
