So Awards Season has finally, finally, lurched to a close, and as we dig ourselves out from under the debris of glitter, old-timey popcorn boxes (seriously, what was up with those?) and injured Cirque du Soleil acrobats, it would be easy to dismiss the whole thing as an overwrought, self-indulgent snoozer. And while that would be largely accurate, we'd be remiss if we didn't acknowledge that the Film Independent Spirit Awards also happened this weekend, and that between host Seth Rogen's killer monologue and the fact that everyone was drinking Irish whiskey the whole time, things were a bit more loose than your average awards show. With the Oscars less than ten days away, all eyes are on Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer for their star-making performances in The Help.  The actresses have racked up critical praise and a slew of awards for their roles of Aibileen Clark (Davis) and Minnie Jackson (Spencer), two African-American maids in white homes in 1960s Mississippi.  Now, Davis and Spencer are the frontrunners in the Oscar race for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively, and we wish them all the best! In celebration of their nominations and Black History Month, we compiled a retrospective of past winners.
