Wow, so it's been a while since we all had an awards show, right? That's just about the only explanation I can muster for the general positivity surrounding the Billboard Music Awards, which folks were pretty jazzed on last night despite the mediocre lineup, meandering pace, and schizophrenic attempt to stay positive despite a raft of tributes to recently deceased musical icons. Still, the evening wasn't without its charms, to say nothing of the moments so forehead-smacking tone-deaf that they also warrant acknowledgement. Let's take a good look at both! More»
Since Adam Yauch passed away earlier this month, there's been no shortage of support from his fans around the world. And now, just days after news that the New York State Senate passed a resolution honoring the late Beastie Boy, Yauch's hometown will pay tribute to him with a day long celebration in Union Square. Following evening live music events featuring the likes of Santigold and James Murphy, night 16 of the 17-day Transmission LA: AV Club interdisciplinary art festival at MOCA curated by Mike D had to go big. Perhaps that's why Diplo, everyone's favorite DJ/producer/BlackBerry spokesperson, was tapped to close out one of the undisputed coolest L.A. cultural happenings to go down in recent history with one of his signature panty-dropping DJ sets on Cinco de Mayo Saturday night. It was also just a day after the tragic news of the death of the event maestro's fellow Beastie Boy, MCA AKA Adam Yauch, so see how Diplo paid tribute to the rapper who taught us how to get ill. [There's a new mural up on 7th street between 1st and 2nd avenues in tribute to Adam 'MCA' Yauch of the Beastie Boys. The legendary rapper died at age 47 Friday morning after a three-year battle with cancer. We will most likely be seeing many more of these. Photo via Dennis Crowley's Instagram.]

It's impossible, try as we might, not to view Mike D's amazing Transmission L.A. audio/visual art festival at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA through the prism of last week's tragic loss of Beastie Boy Adam "MCA" Yauch. But, while it's not our place to presume to know MCA's thoughts, we're pretty sure he would have been happy that even as the world was mourning his loss, Transmission was continuing to thrill music-loving audiences with big-name performances like Thursday's show from British garage pioneer DJ Harvey and LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy. Last night's Arlo Guthrie concert in Battery Park for the River to River Festival looked pretty chill, but let's be honest here: the real party is going to be tonight's kick-off of the All Points West music festival at Liberty State Park. Jay-Z is headlining! (The Beastie Boys were supposed to, but Adam Yauch sadly came down with a wee bit of throat cancer.) More»
