When I was younger, it seemed like the radio station mega-concert was the coolest thing on the planet. Nowadays you can't throw a bottle of $1,500 champagne in a New York nightclub without hitting a Coachella, EDC, or Bonnaroo, but back in the day, festivals like that only happened once in a blue moon (who remembers Woodstock '94?). So instead, we went to one-day, local radio sponsored concerts in sports stadiums with vaguely nonsensical names like the "River Rave". Well, it's a brave new world (with far superior festivals) these days, but not every radio station is ready to give up just yet. And if the new versions of those old radio station shows can still provide the talent like Power 106's PowerHouse, there's still hope for the classic radio station show yet. More»
Anytime you have an opportunity to spend the night in the filthy concourse of one of the most highly-trafficked amusement parks in the world in order to get into an attraction based on Pixar's worst movie, you have to take that chance, right? That seems to be the logic of the loyal Mouseketeers who spent the night outside of Disneyland's California Adventure last night, all for the chance to be among the first regular guests to experience Cars Land, a brand new attraction zone featuring, you guessed it, the cars from Cars. Was Van Halen's Saturday show at the Staples Center the last time we'll ever see them in L.A.? It's certainly a possibility. Well, if it's the end, at least it was a pretty bitchin' end, as our photos from the Staples gig (and a few snapshots from last night at the Honda Center) prove. More»
Happy Monday, everyone! Sure, the weekend was pretty rainy, which may (or may not) have affected your outdoor binge-drinking plans, but as it turns out, the real excitement was all indoors anyway, as thousands of our galaxy's greatest heroes, villains and robots got rides from their moms to the Anaheim Convention Center for WonderCon 2012, a ComicCon precursor and, we must admit, a fashion show far more exciting than any that went down in L.A. during a generally unspectacular Fashion Week. But how do these extremely intricate costumes live up to the characters they're based on? Let's dissect our favorites. More»
Quick, name a place where children, celebrities, and grown adults in elaborate costumes all mingle to obsess over kids cartoons? If you guessed Roman Polanski's Swiss hideaway, you're probably right, but in this particular case, we're talking about Disney's D23 Expo last weekend in Anaheim.
