On the cusp of its bacchanalian Carnival, Rio's mayor is cracking down on all the fun that made the city's beaches an international destination. A coastline devoid of food vendors and volleyball (and with new port-a-potties!) seems incomplete. But, no, I'll still say it beats blizzardy New York right now. More»

Bud Club. Beijing

The Bud Club has been quite the party spot in Beijing these games.  Open every other night, there is copious amounts of free beer (Budweiser only of course), spacious dance floors, and athletes wall-to-wall.  WIth sporting events over this evening in China, this place is guaranteed to be live tonight!  And the best part is all spectators and athletes alike are welcome to come together and celebrate.  So head on over if you are in Beijing tonight, Ni Hao, Bihvhar!

Luckily , the day opened with clear, bright skies for my trip to the Great Wall. To avoid the crowds at the Beijing sections of the Wall, we headed to the mountainous region north of the city, to the section of Wall at Simatai. Located about 75 miles from Beijing, Simatai is the section farthest from the city, and is one of the few to retain the original features of the Ming Dynasty. Running along the peaks of the Yanshan Mountains, it is also the highest section; the Wangjinglou Tower at the summit reaches a height of 3,281 feet, and on a clear night you can see the lights of Beijing. To build at such precarious heights, goats had to be used to haul up the bricks, one at a time.

Forbidden CityGo Here for many more photos

On our next non-competition day, we got to visit the Forbidden City and Tian'an Men Square, which are at the very center of Beijing. Officially known now as the Palace Museum, the complex housed both the government and the private residences of the Imperial Court for over 600 years. There are 800 residences, temples, courtyards, offices, and plazas covering 178 acres. The day began gray and hazy again. By the time we arrived at the Forbidden City, it had begun to rain pretty hard, but we couldn't pass up a chance to explore this impressive site:

The men's crew races are really starting to heat up, but the REAL fun will begin in less than a week when the work is over and the partying can begin!

olympic guardolympic villageolympic restricted items

It's time to check in with the athletes over in Beijing. Here are some pictures straight from the Athlete's village. I love the guard on the stand at the edge of the "Olympic Green", the entrance to the athlete's village, quite the stoic. The last item is a photo of a list of the forbidden and restricted items for the Olympic village. Looks like you're going to have to leave your cocaine, heroin, and radioactive isotopes at home guys. Shucks.
