On Saturday, Paper Magazine hosted a dinner in honor of Pedro Almodovar, Penelope Cruz and their latest film, “Broken Embraces.” At the brand new Casa Lever (scheduled to open this week), the director and starlette sat with Paper’s Peter Davis and Mickey Boardman, the latter also celebrating his birthday. Diners including Madonna, Debbie Harry, Ruben and Isabel Toledo, Cynthia Rowley, Luigi Tadini and Patrick McMullan enjoyed a set menu including parmesan risotto and swordfish to fete the flick, which closed this year’s New York Film Festival. Mad Men’s John Slattery, Mercedes Ruehl, Bernadette Peters, Tony Sirico, Tom Florio and Alana de la Garza helped recognize honorees including David Greenberg and Mary Sammons, who had a critical role in educating the public about the importance of sun protection. Dogs and cats filled Schubert Alley on Saturday as stage stars, including the ever sexy Angela Lansbury, Allison Janney, David Hyde Pierce, Mary Tyler Moore, Bernadette Peters, and Ugly Betty’s Michael Urie and Becki Newton presented the pets from local shelters for adoption. Nicholas Cage is returning to the big screen with a big Alex Proyas-directed (I, Robot) blockbuster. Knowing, an action thriller about a professor (Cage) who stumbles across chilling predictions of the future, held a special screening Monday night at the Lincoln Square AMC Theater with cast members Rose Byrne, Chandler Canterbury, Lara Robinson in attendance along with Jill Hennessy, Bernadette Peters, Kiki Palmer, and Cage’s wife Alice Kim Cage.
