Not a bottle service club Avenue celebrated its first birthday on Wednesday night. Veteran nightlife chronicler Steve Lewis was there to toast the joint's past but walked away with a scoop about its future: Jayma Cardoso, of Goldbar, Surf Lodge and Cain might leave that club empire for Avenue's. Last night, Cain shut its doors for the final time, but not before hosting one last, alcohol soaked party. In the face of a crumbling Empire, owners and clubbers of West 27th Street gamely donned their finest club wear and undertook the solemn duty of partying in the name of Bungalow, Guesthouse, B.E.D., Marquee, and all those who passed before. The sinking ship of Cain approached its final hours, and the DJ played on. More»

"After an amazing 5 years Cain will be closing it's doors. Please join us for an unforgettable night on Wednesday March 24th at 11pm to help us celebrate,"

-Jamie Mulholland, owner of Cain.

Yup, after climbing to the top of the West 27th Street bottle service heap, the safari-themed lounge is beating its final drum.  More»

New York had a rough decade. The '00s were bookended and defined by calamities in the Financial District that had global ramifications. Far less tragically, the city's cultural scene underwent significant shakeups.  Here's the first part in a look at those transitions, and verdicts on the people and movements that will define NYC in the '10s. Pssst, there's a new hidden bar on the LES. No, no one knows where it is. Yeah, it was a taco stand or brothel or fallout shelter or something. To get in, you descend the stairs, cartwheel through the kitchen, dry hump the busboy and...zzzzzzzzzzz. Breaking news: the Eighteenth Amendment was repealed. But we'd welcome a prohibition on New York's speakeasy revival. More»

Orzel Vodka's hosted a Winter Wonderland party at CAIN LUXE last week with Grammy Winner DJ Little Louie Vega.  Talk about a good night for the gentlemen above.  A make out session underneath dancing girls?  Look out those outfits, I'm pretty impressed, the girls at Cain seem to have a different outfit on every time we see them!

[The doors outside the new Cain Luxe]

Guest of a Guest Exclusive! First inside the new Cain Luxe!

Jamie Mullholland was in flip flops today when I met with him.  He's trying to hold on to summer as well.

Fitting for the piece I just did, as I showed him this on his computer.  It was indeed strange sitting with the charming South African in his office atop Cain, instead of the deck outside at Surf Lodge. I was there for a tour of his newest project, CAIN-LUXE, and upon seeing him, wanted to step into a time machine and go back to this day.  Before the walk through of the completely gutted space started, he sat down and answered some of my questions.  Is 27th street REALLY worth it?  Did you look elsewhere?  Well, yes of course, he did, but he also assured me that the space was too good not to redo, and, that the new Cain would set waves through the city, sound waves for starters.  Plus, 27th street is having its revival didn't you know? (more on this later).

Jamie and his partner Jayma are giving Cain, the club which helped define 27th street, a major makeover.  Best described as "Paris meets South Africa", the space is "art deco, it's decadent, think mohair and brass."

Yeah, that's right, CAIN 'aint going anywhere.  And how could it?  They are still one of the most profitable clubs in the city. It's amazing how a guy who shills for Cain so much can be, well, so wrong about them closing for good. Unbelievable. Oh wait, we're talking about Down by the Hipster here. Quite believable. This isn't the first time he's been wrong, and believe me it won't be the last.
