The Hollywood Bowl, as anyone who's even been could tell you, is a breathtaking venue well suited to almost any kind of experience. Arena-style Coldplay concert spectacle? Absolutely. Orchestral versions of popular cartoon movie themes? Sounds good to us. But one area where we've really never tested the Bowl's versatility is with a night of upbeat, electronic-tinged dance rock. Well, until last weekend, anyway, when Hot Chip and Passion Pit stormed the Bowl to prove that the best grooves don't come from a laptop-toting DJ. More»

The original installment of the MTV Video Music Awards took place September 14th, 1984, just a few days after I was born, so I guess you could say the VMA's and I grew up together. And so, like the brother of the Unabomber or the parents of a spree killer, it's probably time for me to admit that the VMA's have, despite our love, grown up to become something of a monster. How else can we explain that the top moments from last night's show, which took place right here in L.A., included a pregnancy announcement from a woman who sells marshmallow vodka? Don't sweat it if you couldn't bring yourself to tune in, either: we've got all the highs and lows from the carpet, the seats, and the stage. More»

We know we haven't always been all that nice to Coldplay in the past. They're a big, broad band that always goes for the emotional kill shot, and we'll absolutely concede that, at times, we've found ourselves annoyed with them. But we also believe that these things are largely a matter of context, and so after they played their second of three shows at the Hollywood Bowl last night, a dazzling, special effects laden tour de force that left pretty much every attendee breathless, we'll happily admit that Coldplay was pretty much born to rock the Bowl in a way that few bands can these days. We suspect that after you see these choice Instagrams from last night's show, you'll agree. More»

The next time you hear some non-Angeleno say L.A. lacks any real culture, ask them if the KROQ Weenie Roast has ever come to wherever they're from or the last time The Weeknd played a show at sunset in a cemetery where famous people like Bugsy Siegel, two of the Ramones, Jayne Mansfield and George Harrison have been laid to rest. It may not feel like L.A.'s five-month-long shorts and sandals pool party season outside yet, but the summer of live music is already going strong with the aforementioned concerts and more, all of which we bring you in this handy guide to L.A.'s top shows to see this week. We've been trying to tell you this for weeks, but the Summer Of Live Music isn't going to be stopping any time soon. Nope, with yet another week of unique shows from big names, old favorites and dynamic new groups, it looks like you're not getting any rest before Labor Day. But trust us, this is nothing to complain about, especially with only-in-L.A. gems like The Weeknd on the Hollywood Forever Cemetery lawn on the radar. So whatever else you might be up to this week, make sure you leave time to Go See A Show! More»
