I’ll admit, I totally forgot about Emily Brill. It makes me think I have too much on my plate. Because, let’s face it, Ms. Brill was what kept our office alive during those slow news days last summer. 2pm would roll around, and just when we were ready to plop our heads down for a nap, Emily would post a video belting out a song from Disney on I-27, Devorah Rose by her side, and Princess Buttercup hanging out the window, happier than Adrien Field the day he met Mary Rambin. Cancer101 sort of sounds like an ill fated biology class from college, no? Well, Cancer101 is in fact a non-for-profit organization whose mission is to “empower patients, survivors, caregivers and those affected by breast cancer to take control of their diagnosis by providing them with the necessary armor to fight the disease.” On June 30, Cancer101 hosted “Big Top At The Bowery” a benefit cocktail party at The Bowery Hotel honoring patients, survivors, and caregivers.

This year the fete celebrated the Louvre Pyramid, designed by preeminent architect (and genius) I.M. Pei. Before St. Jude’s Charity Hospital began research and treatment the survival rate for children with cancer was 4%. It is now 94%. That is an amazing achievement, but still cancer is the Number 1 killer of children. So it was to benefit this cause that the fabulous event called Design Cares was held.
