Oh, James Franco, thank god you're alright! We've been so worried about you as it's been almost a full month since we last caught up with you... and you had your hair in cornrows. We're pleased to report he was back in full smirking, self-satisfied effect this weekend for the opening of Rebel, the off-site MOCA art show he curated. Though he did wear a suit to the opening reception, he didn't stray too far beyond his comfort zone as he clearly could not be bothered to run a comb though his hair for at least a full day prior to the event. Here's a look at who showed up for the Rebel debut and what the Franco-curated exhibition is all about. More»

It's impossible, try as we might, not to view Mike D's amazing Transmission L.A. audio/visual art festival at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA through the prism of last week's tragic loss of Beastie Boy Adam "MCA" Yauch. But, while it's not our place to presume to know MCA's thoughts, we're pretty sure he would have been happy that even as the world was mourning his loss, Transmission was continuing to thrill music-loving audiences with big-name performances like Thursday's show from British garage pioneer DJ Harvey and LCD Soundsystem's James MurphyMore»

Heidi Klum, Tom Hanks, and Rita Wilson play dress-up and sing karaoke to raise funds for UNICEF; Santa Monica Museum of Art's PRECOGNITO Gala draws Emmy Rossum, Ben McKenzie, and a Mary-Kate-less Ashley Olsen to preview the INCOGNITO art exhibition; Lana Del Rey, Quincy Jones, Owen Wilson and Jared Leto hit up the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability—get all of this and more and to see who got a head-start on weekend fun on Thursday in L.A. in this edition of Last Night's Parties. Visiting a museum and catching up on your art game is an awesome way to feel good about how you spend your downtime and perhaps sound smarter than your friends. Lots of exciting things in the world of art are happening right now in L.A. and we're here to break it down for you and tell you which local shows and attractions we think you should go see this week. It's October? When did that happen? I swear I JUST paid September's rent, like, yesterday. Time flies when you're having fun/on a deadline, eh? Well this means that everyone is back in the swing of things, Pacific Standard Time is in full swing and our days are shorter and colder so you can't blow off art for the beach anymore. See you around this weekend, there is some GREAT stuff going on! More»

I know you guys probably assume I survive on only art and creativity, but alas, I need food, shelter and full time employment to support it. This week in said job, I have been super busy! It's great, but it has kept me from really being able to do a full awesome weekly update! So I'm doing something a little different. More»
