Confession time: everyone who works in our office is older than 17, and it thus follows that we were slightly concerned about Day Two of HARD Summer after a Day One experience that was utterly brilliant. With the Joseph Kony of dubstep, Skrillex, headlining the day, would we find ourselves too old for HARD? Well, we needn't have feared, for as we discovered, HARD maestro Gary Richards has a gift for festival scheduling, the results of which were another perfect day of something for everyone, even jaded old 20-somethings like us. With the crazy amount of parties, concerts and special events going on in town this past weekend, it would have been almost impossible for you not to find yourself in the middle of something exciting. But the hands-down epicenter of excitement in L.A. this weekend was undoubtedly HARD Summer, the 2-day EDM/electronica rave festival held at the L.A. State Historic Park. We've been hyping it up for weeks now, but with the dust still settling, we feel it's important to confirm that, true to our predictions, it was indeed everything we hoped for. More»

We give mainstream dubstep a hard time on occasion in these pages, but the reality is, it's not because we don't appreciate the value of having your face mashed in by some insanely deep bass. In fact, if anything, our ambivalence to certain big name DJ's comes more from the knowledge that deep within this beautiful city of ours, there's a long-running night that brings bass the likes of which your typical Hollywood bottle-service crowd has never even dreamed up. Low End Theory, you complete us. More»
One of the drawbacks to many electronic music shows is that they take place indoors. As much fun as a club night with a major headlining DJ can be, a sweaty, claustrophobic indoor space is just kind of the wrong look when you're in the middle of a summer as beautiful as we've been having here in Southern California*. That's why we're beyond thrilled for next weekend (August 3 + 4)'s HARD Summer, Downtown L.A.'s annual massive rave-style outdoor music festival, which looks to seriously up the ante this year with 2 days of music across 4 stages and an insane lineup that should satisfy ravers, indie kids and even hip hop heads. So, um, we can't exactly claim that we saw this coming, but it looks like we'll be getting Coachella back into our lives a bit sooner than we expected, with a killer mini-lineup led by Pulp, Hot Chip, James Murphy and Sleigh Bells. But before you start booking hotels in Palm Springs, we should probably tell you that it's going to be a little different. Like, "on a cruise boat going from Florida to Jamaica" different. Read on for the full lineup and details! More»

Let's face it: any DJ crew can call themselves "World Famous", and it doesn't necessarily mean squat. Just because someone at Bar Marmont let Paz De La Huerta drunkenly control the iPod for a few songs, that doesn't make her a "World Famous" DJ any more than it makes her an icon of responsible life decisions. But then again, if you call yourself "World Famous" and back it up with a 20-year career of absolutely killing it with classic turntable skills, a devotion to real hip-hop, and the respect of a global community, then, yes, you've probably earned the right to call yourself The World Famous Beat Junkies, who celebrated their 20th with a jam session at the Echoplex that brought out hip hop heads and famous faces alike. Coachella-goers: by now, hopefully, you've got yourself together. You're dressed, ready, you've studied the setlist, maybe you're even at the gates already. But, tragic as it is to admit, you can't be everywhere at once, so you've still got some tough choices to make. Well don't worry, we cover Coachella year-round around these parts, and that means we've already prepared a day-by-day breakdown of our top picks for unmissable shows– some headliners and some more obscure.
