Less than 24 hours ago, the Sunset Junction Street Fair was fighting for its life. Today, that fight appears to be over. Having been initially denied a permit over $141,000 in as-of-yet unpaid fees for this year's festival, the event's promoters were given a day to come up with the outstanding amount. While today they were able to produce bank confirmation of an emergency $100,000 loan from promotions giant Live Nation, but that wasn't enough for the Board of Public Works, who unanimously struck down their desperate pleas for a further extension on the permit fee. The recent saga of the Sunset Junction Street Fair probably gibes pretty well with what we already thought about the people of Silver Lake: pretty cool, aggressively hip, but not necessarily the friends you want to count on to drop the check in the mail when they say they will. Which doesn't bode too well for this weekend's scheduled festival, which yesterday was denied its permit by the Board of Public Works as a result of several hundred thousand in unpaid fees from this and last year's festivities. Paper Magazine and Ray-Ban presented Sounds Like Paper, the first of what is supposed to be three FREE concerts at the South Street Seaport yesterday. Drake, Hanson, and Ninjasonik were scheduled to perform but after rabid Drake fans and middle-aged, Hanson T-Shirt wearing women scaled the booths for a birds-eye view of the event, all hell broke loose.
