Interview With Richie Rich
“When a came to New York I had a bag of glitter and a vanity mirror in my hand…and they were like, “You’re a club kid we’ve been looking for you!”
Sometimes you need someone that reminds you to not take yourself too seriously, to play dress up even if no one else is playing along, to be less judgmental of people, and to let loose and engage in some good clean fun every now and then. Richie Rich has been that person for me. Don’t let the ex-club kid status fool you. This guy has accomplished more than most “average Joes” out there, creating an empire that extends far beyond the Heatherette clothing line. He is put-together, articulate, and extremely charming; perhaps the opposite of what many who have heard about him imagine him to be.
When I think of New York City, Richie Rich is one of the images that comes to mind. He’s also part of the reason I know this city is not dead. Last week, I had the honor of interviewing Richie, along with good friend and business partner Chris Coffee. He came wearing one of his signature hats, and an uncharacteristically laid back tshirt and jean combo. He looked great. He proceeded to give me the inside juice on all of his upcoming projects, dispelling rumors of Heatherette’s end, and giving me exclusive, never talked about details on his new ventures. I will, no doubt, forever remember this rare afternoon spent on the rooftop on Bowery, getting candid with Richie Rich.
Where are you from and what was your childhood like?
I’m from California, right outside San FranciscoI had the perfect American Childhood with two older brothers. Just really fun and playing outside, building clubhouses and I don’t know I guess I was a tomboy.

Richie Rich Visits Guest Of A Guest Headquarters

“When I came to New York I had a bag of glitter and a vanity mirror in my hand.and they were like, “You’re a club kid we’ve been looking for you!”” -Richie Rich
I have wanted to meet Richie Rich since before I even knew his story. The Club Kids have always held a special place in my heart…those individuals in the 90s that weren’t afraid of expressing themselves to the point of exhaustion in the city I now call my home. I have seen him at numerous parties, always with an entourage of admirers at bay. From Heatherette, to MAC, I have followed his various ventures including the fashion line, makeup line, music, and most currently, shoe line. I don’t know how many times I have brought up the name “Richie Rich” in conversation, nor can I count the number of explanations I’ve had to give to oblivious friends from home who thought I was obsessing over a cartoon character…

Richie Rich Hosts Chris Coffee’s Birthday At Johnny’s
Go HERE for more photos from this event by Antwan Duncan
GURU energy drinks, flavored rum shots, and a mechanical bull? This may sound a little nuts but when a party is hosted by Richie Rich of Heatherette its only to be expected. The birthday boy, 25 year old Chris Coffee, was the hit of the night and his party consisted of an extremely diverse crowd. The boys from Parker were there, along with Joshua Winkler media director of In The Mo, and DJ Spero worked the turn tables.

Blackbook Magazine Takes Over 1Oak

Ever been in a room full of people you’re sure are fabulous but whom you don’t actually recognize? We were, last night at Blackbook Magazine’s May issue bash, held at the “First you need to get in. Then you need to be cool enough to get a table. Then you can get bottles” glory that is 1 Oak. Somehow we got in that door and, later, into a cushy banquette next to our lovely chum Model Behavior. First though, we ran into the ever dapper Single Threat, who was able to give us the down-low (low-down? no doubt) re the buffed and de-puffed cognescetti getting their Skky-fueled freak on to the Beatles and Britney.

If Heatherette Ended….

Just when I hear the incredible news of Mario Lopez on Broadway, THIS comes my way. Heatherette had to cancel their Fall ‘08 show. apparently things are under control, Richie has some housecleaning to do, etc. Let’s hope this is the case, I can’t bear to go a single Christmas without receiving a holiday greeting from the quirky kids over at Heatherette. Passerby is one thing, but the world would just be a different place should Heatherette not be around to grace us with its wackiness. Which is why, we must make sure this never happens. Since it’s now going to be at least fall until we see their creations on the runway, we thought we’d share something with you to help tie you over…

Heatherette MAC Line Party, Finally Giving Us Reason To Go To Kiss And Fly

[Richie Rich and Traver Rains]
Last night, Kiss and Fly hosted the first event in their space that we actually care about reporting on. The Heatherette M.A.C line that we’ve been anxiously anticipating was debuted by founders Richie Rich and Traver Rains (shown above), with a performance by Teyana Taylor. Richie Rich has stated that this is his favorite thing they have done with the line yet, and that he wouldn’t mind hitting the mass markets ala Kohl’s or JC Penny’s so that ever Tom, Dick, and Harry will have the chance to emulate their style. The club kid also has a new record, Celebutante, debuting July 1st, that features Madonna, Fergie, and Mika.“It’s a fashion record you can wear.” he claims. Can.not.wait.

A Subpar Host For A King

I have a secret, and I might as well share. First of all, anyone that knows me, knows of my obsession for all thing club kids…though most of them have no idea where this came from, me being basically the opposite of what you would conjure up in your head upon thinking of those crazy kooky bastards that roamed the city’s nights before Guiliani, before 9-11, before Wholefoods. They were simply crazy, and crazily simple in that regard. But this is not a post about the club kids, who are still around in various forms of Kenny Kenny, Richie Rich, Motherfucker, Heatherette, and young hipsters. This is about a man. A man that depending on the time, and the writer, could be called an award winning club designer, club kid wrangler, doorman, fashion designer (back in the 80s), and night life king…and now, we can add blogger to the list. Yet Steve doesn’t fit any of these…at least for me.
