Pssst, there’s a new hidden bar on the LES. No, no one knows where it is. Yeah, it was a taco stand or brothel or fallout shelter or something. To get in, you descend the stairs, cartwheel through the kitchen, dry hump the busboy and…zzzzzzzzzzz. Breaking news: the Eighteenth Amendment was repealed. But we’d welcome a prohibition on New York’s speakeasy revival. More»

[Todd English and Jon B. Restaurants are the new nightclubs?]
The closing of Home and GuestHouse last week looked to be the coup de grâce for club alley on 27th street that has over the past 3 years devolved into a Coney Island of NYC Nightlife. Bungalow 8, Marquee, and Cain defined the best of the best four years ago, but the spot jumped the shark when famed B-list promoter Jon B appeared on the scene, milking the proverbial teet of a low watt crowd for all of their worth. Well, if you’re ex-boxer from Brooklyn, slash ex-District Attorney from the Bronx, slash actor, slash beleaguered doorman, your crisis of identity is gonna catch up with you sometime and you’ll crack. This is what one can assume happened last night, when GofG favorite Wass Stevens, once of Marquee, now of Avenue, allegedly hit someone with the metal end of a velvet rope when some poor kid from UCSD refused to leave after getting rejected.

In case you were wondering, people are still heading to Marquee to party on Thursdays. And, judging by these photos, maybe we all should too. In this one photo at left I spy a gold metallic scrunchie, a hot pink hair extension, CRIMPED hair, a trucker hat, neon pink sunglasses, and a sparkler! More»
Back in March we ran a piece on actor/clubber Mickey Rourke and how he hooked up a group of his NYC nightlife buddies with parts in The Wrestler. These guys of course are doormen at select Rourke haunts in the city (namely 1 Oak and Cipriani Sundays), and happen to also be budding actors (Though Wass Stevens has definitely gained a lot of traction over the years pre-Wrestler).

[Jason Strauss, Paris Hilton, Noah Tepperberg] Did you miss the lecture that Harvard kids sat in on last week with Strategic Group founders Jason and Noah? Are you curious to see what it’s like to party around Jason Strauss himself? Wait no longer. The man himself will be tearing it up at Marquee tonight at his very own birthday party. The action starts at 10pm. Expect to see friends like partner Noah Tepperburg and Rich Thomas in attendance. As for getting in? You’re going to have to work that out on your own with Wass.

Happy Birthday Rich Thomas! One of Strategic Groups most valuable assets, Rich had a big birthday celebration in the private room at Marquee. His beautiful wife Tamie was there of course, to help toast Rich. Keep your eye on Mr. Thomas in ‘09…there are some exciting things in store and we will be there every step of the way.

[Doormen Maurizio Ferrigno, Armin Amiri, and Wass Stevens all star in The Wrestler]
We can’t help but find Mickey Rourke lovable. Maybe its because he was such a misfit in the past, or because he still loves to rip it up on the town at 1 Oak and Cipriani Sundays, or perhaps it’s that he has risen from the ashes like a Phoenix. Or maybe it’s because he hooked up his nightlife friends (and NYC resident doormen) with parts in The Wrestler. This isn’t to say these guys wouldn’t have made it on their talent, but it sure doesn’t hurt to get a good referral from Mickey (and he has certainly logged in his time with these guys over the years!)
A quick recap on the doormen, the clubs they work at, and the parts they played: More»

Straight from our tip line, we have the exclusive on some HUGE NEWS: Marquee is closing! They are apparently transferring it’s license from it’s 27th street outpost to the old Earth space. Marquee, the flagship of the Strategic Group’s vast empire, has defined odds by not only helping create a neighborhood, but by sticking around for over 5 years! (That’s like 95 years in club land!)
