The Plaza Hotel, originally constructed in 1907, travelled back in time with a night of jazz performed by Michael Fredo and his quintet. June 3rd, Fredo and his quintet brought the same magical vibes to the Plaza Hotel that had previously made it such a prominent landmark and historical place in New York City. More»

Music and fashion heavyweights turned up at 1OAK Saturday night to support stylist turned hip hop artist, O’Neal McKnight’s newest release, “The Pre-Prom Mixtape.” McKnight became a hit last year with his star-packed music videos, including “Check Your Coat” (cameos by Swizz Beats and Russell Simmons) and “Back to the Future” which aptly features actor Christopher Lloyd.  McKnight’s buddy, DJ Cassidy, and Jus Ske held down the turntables while guests such as John Legend, Angie Martinez, Tyson Beckford, and Richie Akiva partied the night away. Last night over in LALA Land, the GRAMMY foundation held its eleventh annual music preservation event. Held at Wilshire Ebell Theatre, the event was named “Music in Focus”and featured a discussion with Danny Clinch, the official Grammy photographer.  Other well known photographers there included Robert Knight and Herman Leonard.  The moderator for their discussion was none other than MTV’s Kurt Loder (remember him??). There were, of course, some performances as well as showcases of the photos that these photographers had taken. Sharon Stone was there and looked beautiful.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame finally extended it’s reach outside of Cleveland, Ohio with the opening of The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Annex in Manhattan which opened it’s doors Tuesday night in Soho. Melissa Lusk“Once I’m onstage, you’re my guest” says Mel, an inspiring downtown musical artist. What she says is true - her shows are always responsive to her audience. She talks and engages them as she weaves a musical set to the crowd’s liking. Melissa Lusk is a New York born (Brooklyn) and educated (NYU) singer/songwriter. Her songs have simple playful names like Summer of ’06 and Mack Truck. Growing up she focused on influences like Cole Porter and Ben Folds. Lately she has been revisiting Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple and other angry girls of the 90s that she missed out due to lack of MTV.

Birdland Big BandReferenced everywhere from Sesame Street to Kerouac’s, On The Road, Birdland has been a jazz stronghold in Manhattan since the ‘50s, when Charlie “Bird” Parker headlined and guests like Marilyn Monroe and Gary Cooper were often in the audience. There’s no better timer to pay a visit than Friday night, when the legendary Birdland Big Band performs, these days under the direction of Tommy Igoe.

To kick off the first track on their first album, Ratatat announced: “I’ve been rapping for about seventeen years, OK. I don’t write my stuff anymore, I just kick it from my head.”

And, including a live show of theirs I saw in Nashville, these are pretty much the only words I’ve gotten from the duo. Their third album, released today, with its deadpan title of “LP3” once again leaves all the talking to 12:51-esque sound of Mike Stroud’s guitar and Evan “E*Vax” Mast’s synthesizer. Combined, the two emit a wide range of sounds, from goofy licks that sound like stuff from an old arcade game to great hooks that really should be Kanye’s next “Stronger”. Their great new sound, say disco meets new age, is back again today, with 14 new songs.

Rock to Save Darfur

Last night Talib Kweli performed at the Rock to Save Darfur Benefit held at B.B. Kings (love B.B.’S),  and all proceeds from ticket sales and t-shirts go to organizations dedicated to ending genocide in Sudan. Kweli is one of the best-known and critically, if not commercially, successful rappers in alternative hip hop, first gaining recognition through Black Star, a collaboration with fellow MC Mos Def.  Max was able to get some pictures of the show and even got a peek backstage!
