If you haven’t been to the Heist Gallery to see the current exhibition, Boats Against The Current, you should. We were there for the opening, as photographer Andrea Tese celebrated her first solo photography show. “Boats Against the Current” is comprised of selected images from her series “After”, a project in which she tried to “capture the crucial moment that follows a marking experience”. Among those enjoying the show were Kipton Cronkite of KiptonArt, Marlborough Gallery’s Melyora Kramer, Heist’s Talia Eisenberg, Lauren Warwick (Tese’s sister) and Cesar Lechowick (who were both subjects of Tese’s work), Vincent and Joyce Tese, Stonington Cox, Ellen Stendahl, Dior’s Brooke Travis, and Vogue’s Elissa Lumley and Valerie Boster.

We all know and love Jeff Koons’ slick balloon animal-esque sculptures that graced the Met’s rooftop. Well, last night, The National Arts Club, they decided to present Koons with a gold medal of honor at a dinner party in his honor. Also, several of the guests decided to don creative eye-wear in his honor. Koons, who recently made an apperance in “Milk”, has contributed to the art world for quite some time, often causing an uproar (artistically, personally).

Last night, Chelsea’s Tyler Rollins Fine Art gallery held an opening reception for Ron Agam’s exhibition entitled ‘In Full Bloom’. The colors lit up the room. Ron, (who was brought up in Paris, Israel, and New York), on the Tyler Rollins site, speaks about treating the flowers as if they were faces, as he had been used to portraits. After over a year of working with the flowers, Agam realized how important they are and decided that he wanted this exhibition to make a statement on saving our environment so that these beautiful majestic flowers can keep blooming.

Tuesday night the Marian Goodman Gallery held the opening reception for artist John Baldessari’s Raised Eyebrows/ Furrowed Foreheads show. Like he did in his other series ‘Noses & Ears, Etc,’ or Arms and Legs (Specif. Elbows and Knees), Etc’, Baldessari used his paintings from the ’50s as the source that he explores using space and color. This series “continues the artist’s exploration of human identity through the fragmentation of parts of the body.” The opening brought out a definite sense of joy and excitement in its viewers- perhaps having to do with the colorful accents residing in his pieces.

Every New Yorker knows that Thursdays bring about a slew of gallery openings. Last night, Milk Gallery held the opening of an art show that brought to light the sour truth behind Cambodia’s sex trade and human trafficking. Norman Jean Roy’s TRAFFIK exhibition is also made into a book. The whole project started when Roy met a former sex slave, Somaly Mam, while he was on assignment. Some more about their collaboration on the project here. The opening brought out many people, and most of the guests had a laid-back style with an artistic flair whether it be with their flannel, hairdos, or hats.

Last night we were lucky to attend the opening reception for Norwegian artist Unni Askeland’s exhibit FRIEZED:BLONDIE IN THE FOREST. The exhibit, held at the Heiberg Cummings Design studio will be up from October 30th-Nov 21. Guests were treated to the amazing vocals of blues singer Terri White, while Unni bounced around the room making sure to talk to each arriving visitor. The artist, described as the “enfant terrible” of the contemporary Norwegian art scene, lived up to her glamorous reputation as she sipped wine in a audacious leopard print dress.

This jet-setting art installation and architectural gem includes work from contemporary artists across Europe, Asia, The U.S., Russia, and Latin America. Last Saturday, artist Laure Peugeot presented her large scale oil on canvas paintings and ceramic sculptures at Zev Starr-Tambor’s studio in Tribeca. Attendees were a mix of downtown types, visiting Parisians (some of whom flew in for the show) and a few lurkers from the Upper East Side. The paintings, detail images of flowers, painted on a large scale up to 6 feet by 7 feet, popped off the long brick walls of the studio. As a floral painter post-Georgia O’Keefe, it is a real challenge to do images in this style. Laure pulls it off with a slightly different perspective, and attention to detail. Her knowledge of color and flowing brush stroke make the strongest of the pieces stand out.
