Trips off the tongue, doesn’t it? Last night Liam McMullan and Lawrence Rassin showed more than cleverness with event titles, they showed off their cleverness with fashion, and in Liam’s case, funk, while introducing their respective fashion lines, as part of a Dean’s Dialogue program at FIT’s School of Art and Design. Raissin showed off his collection for fall, and also sat down with Erika Dalya Muhammad for a Q&A with a packed auditorium of the fashion-obsessed. More»

Vivienne Tam’s F/W 09 Collection is inspired by “An Exploration of Nothingness.“ When I first heard this it reminded me of one of my favorite restaurants, Asolare, in St. John USVI. In Greek, Asolare means “the leisurely passing of time without purpose”. From this time of seemingly no purpose, great things can come about - we’ve all been told, “Sometimes the best thing you can do is nothing.” Vivienne Tam’s current collection started with the Asian philosophy of creating an empty space that gives way to something new and unexpected.

While New York City eagerly awaits the arrival of this year’s (recession-chic) Fall ’09 Fashion Week, designer Alvin Valley threw a soiree for his favorite Los Angeles ladies at the Bel-Air home of Kelly and Nick Styne. A very pregnant (and glowing) Minnie Mortimer Gaghan joined guests like Lulu de Kwiatkowksi, Julie Jaffer, jewelry queen Loree Rodkin, Carlota Espinoza, and Quinn Ezralow. Guests were treated to Alvin’s Spring 2009 line (complete with flirty wrap dresses and his signature sexy pant combos), as well as a tour of the estate.

While New Yorkers are gearing up for a sneak peek of Fall ‘09 styles at February’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, independent designers all over the city are unveiling their spring collections. It can admittedly be a bit of drag to see a parade of more coats, sweaters, hats, and scarves while we’re already cold and shivering, a fact which makes these spring shows all the more appreciated and promising. This sense of seasonal optimism was no exception at the Thuy Spring ‘09 Runway Show last Friday.

Partnering with Linda Pratka of Ilus, the exclusive dress boutique, the evening offered the unique opportunity for young designers to have their work carried next to today’s biggest designer labels. Designers were invited to upload their sketches onto MyItThings.com and site users selected the top twenty-five designs through popular vote. Then, the three finalists were awarded $300 to create their garment, where the winner’s design was unveiled and will now be available at Ilus.
