So Awards Season has finally, finally, lurched to a close, and as we dig ourselves out from under the debris of glitter, old-timey popcorn boxes (seriously, what was up with those?) and injured Cirque du Soleil acrobats, it would be easy to dismiss the whole thing as an overwrought, self-indulgent snoozer. And while that would be largely accurate, we'd be remiss if we didn't acknowledge that the Film Independent Spirit Awards also happened this weekend, and that between host Seth Rogen's killer monologue and the fact that everyone was drinking Irish whiskey the whole time, things were a bit more loose than your average awards show. You know how when you're a kid, you always want to sit with the grown-ups at the big table, but then when you get there you realize that the kids' table was more fun to begin with? That's kind of the deal with the Oscars after party scene, also. Sure, it's a great honor to get invited to the show and the subsequent "Governor's Ball," but there's a reason why the Academy finally scuttled the sit-down dinner element of the Ball for a more streamlined cocktail-party this year: because people kept leaving early to go to all the other parties, including the perpetually star-studded Vanity Fair gala at the Sunset Tower. It's a simple fact that there just aren't enough seats in the Kodak Hollywood & Highland Center to accommodate our nation's massive influx of newly-minted celebrities. I'm sure there was a time where it seemed like every famous face in the world could fit into one theater, but now that you can become an international superstar just by co-starring in Ray J's sex tape, Hollywood's idle rich face a chilling awards-show seating crisis. Luckily, the solution lies, as usual, with magical piano wizard Elton John, who upgraded the size and scale of the 20th incarnation of his annual Oscar viewing party, and raised over $5 million for charity as a result. Let's take a look... More»
Thanks to Billy Crystal and an Academy comprised of old, humorless, white men, the Oscars was a night where the microphone feedback was far louder than the laughs. But have no fear, Twitter saved the day, boasting not only new accounts from Angelina Jolie's right leg and JLo's nipple, but a semi-offical #tweetroast by funnier comedians lambasting Tinseltown's favorite PR campaign. Here are some humorous highlights. More»

The four hour long lullaby known as The Academy Awards will be airing this Sunday, and if you're not pumped to see Billy Crystal try and save this sinking ship for the ninth time, then you agree with most Americans who view the whole thing as a yawn-inducing, if obligatory, formal event. But despite the Academy's ongoing effort to ensure that the show is as bland and inoffensive as a bowl of tapioca, things happen on live TV. Here's a list of the 11 wildest moments, from cross dressers to streakers, F-bombs to on-stage kisses, from Oscars past. More»
As a recent study by the Los Angeles Times revealed, Oscar voters are mostly old, white men who probably vote for movies like The Artist because they can still remember the age of silent film. As a result, there's a disconnect between what The Academy considers a "Best Picture" and the opinion of the general public, which tends toward funnier and sexier fare (see: Ryan Gosling). Here's a list of films that got shafted. More»

With the Oscars less than ten days away, all eyes are on Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer for their star-making performances in The Help. Now, Davis and Spencer are the frontrunners in the Oscar race for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively, and we wish them all the best!
