Westway was a fitting place to hold an afterparty full of ex-80s/90s club kids and their posses after the much anticipated premiere of "Limelight" the movie. Peter Gatien is arguably heralded as the King of New York City nightlife by most in the business. But his reign of the 80's and 90's underground club scene (with ownership of Limelight, Tunnel, Palladium, and Club USA) came crumbling apart after Mayor Guiliani cracked down with the cops, and pegged Gatien as the face of the downfall of the nightlife counterculture. Beloved diner owner, France-hating Frenchman and man of reason Florent Morellet is tired of New Yorkers who are tired of the local nocturnal scene. It's time to snap out of it, in the words of one cinematic New Yorker, and start something new rather than mourn the old. What places do we need to get over? MoreĀ»
Union Square used to be a nexus of bleeding edge nightlife. 33 Union Sq. West housed the second incarnation of Andy Warhol's Factory. His favorite LSD-saturated haunt, Max's Kansas City, was a few blocks north. And the late Palladium (now an NYU dorm, natch) was a stone's throw away on 14th St. Now, a team of nightlife vets hopes to revive the magic with the Union Square Lounge. MoreĀ»
Palladium, that little nightclub on 14th street owned by Steve Rubell may have closed in '98, but palladium, the rare silver-white metal that the club stole its name from is making a comeback. Discovered in 1803 and named after the asteroid Pallas, which was so named after the epithet of the Greek goddess Athena, Palladium is becoming the new platinum in a discouraging market.
